suggestions for increasing character of society

I'm looking for ways to increase the overall character of society in general. This is for a personal project i'm working on. Please leave religion out of it. This could be things that we do with children in school to increase the likliness that they'll have good character as an adult, etc. Broad and specific ideas are both welcomed. Thanks!

Be the change.
Seriously, the best way to increase the character of society is to become more concsious yourself. Since we are all connected, and there is a shared concsiousness, when you increase yours, you add to the pool, in a manner of speaking.

i understand what you say, and i know this. however, i'm looking for broader, society-based solutions. for my project, the individual element is not a valid means of change.

It's really very simple. Have a purpose as a nation and work towards it.

Our purpose as a country is made implicit in the constitution:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

However, the constitution itself has become more and more marginalized lately, by the men who swore to uphold it.

There's an epidemic of cheating and shady behavior at all levels in society. Why? For one reason, because we have a perception (a true one) that people who are already rich can do anything they want to and get richer.

Crack down on cheating rich people--CEOs, corporations, etc.--i.e., have the governmetn stop actively colluding with them, then, once that's cleaned up, make it clear in the media that that's what's going on, and then have some kind of clever advertising campaign encouraging people to stop cheating.

(I love feeling like I have all the answers to society's ills, lol)

that's a good one. yes, it is a huge problem that people with money (and thus power) have the ability to maintain their power even in ways that are illegal. i'd never looked at it as a matter of character, however. good one.

That is the only means of change though. But, if you have to keep it in separation, I'd surround people/children with art, music, and beauty -- integrate those things with all experiences.... food, architecture, cars, clothes, neighborhoods, products, etc. Make it so people cannot forget how beautiful life is. Make the world the reflection they seek.
I'd also remove all negative news, both broadcast and print.

Well, I think any real change will come from that avenue. I think society will have to evolve to where we understand things on a basic level, so that we are not so separate from each other. That is a concsiousness thing.
The outward benefits would be things along the lines of no war ( no me against you ), no greed ( less ego to satisfy ), things like that.

To move toward that, I suggest we concentrate on changing the structure of how we educate our children. Teach them more about how to meditate, or to put their thoughts under their control, instead of letting their thoughts control them.
Have them learn not to be so attached and identified to their thoughts, so that they can break free of the unconscious patterns that have driven society for eons.

So short answer for your project : Radical shift in how we educate our children.

media problems, change in educational processes... two exceptionally good ones that i completely agree with. thanks for the input guys.

i'm still looking for more, both big and small. don't forget we have up to 150 years to change (that's several generations).
