Default Weekly Focus:Purity

For the ZenCollegeLife.com first ever weekly focus I chose a characteristic that is pretty easily identifiable and understandable: Purity. It is a simple principle, and with a little conscious effort and dedication it could change either a little or a lot of your daily routine, all for the better.

To give you a better understanding of purity, let me list a few definitions which are relevant to the Purity that I am talking about.

“the condition or quality of being pure; freedom from anything that debases, contaminates, pollutes, etc.”

“Freedom from sin or guilt; innocence; chastity.”

“the state of being unsullied by sin or moral wrong.”

So in this sense purity is free of sin or moral wrong, free of contaminates, or pollutes. Purity is clean. It is the act of doing right and forbidding and avoiding wrong.

The beauty of the principal of purity is that it can in can be conceptually applied to any field or endeavor of life. There are pure tv shows and impure ones; Pure and impure music; Pure and impure thoughts; Pure and impure people.

If you start consciously apply the principle of purity to your life, it will become easier with each decision to see what is pure and what is not. American Idol ,The Girls Next Door, and other such programming will not aid in your growth as a human being. It will not make you more conscious of the world. In fact, many times it will do the exact opposite.

If you had made the choice to watch a documentary instead, read a book, play a sport, or do something else of that nature, you would have aided in your own personal growth, and thus committed an act of purity.

Another important part of the concept of purity is how it pertains to people. As we all know purity is a concept that can be used to describe people. Now none of us is completely pure, or we wouldn’t be human, but using the concept of levels of purity you can better decide who to spend time with and be around. Being around people who are less pure than you is only asking for the influence of impurity. Choosing to be around people who are more pure than you will aid in the influence of being more pure. It is ultimately your decision who to be around, and if being pure is something that you believe in, a characteristic that you want to be described as, then this could play an important role in helping you become more pure.

Now what I am offering you is not a strict change in your lifestyle, but rather a new concept to aid in your decision making processes which if done correctly will lead you to a mind of purity and greater consciousness. And if you are reading this site, this is probably something you are interested in achieving. I know I am. So let’s take a few baby steps in the direction of being pure. Take a look at your daily routine. See where you can improve. When faced with an important decision, decide to take the more pure choice. It can only lead you to a better place in life.

“Purity of mind and idleness are incompatible.” - Mahatma Gandhi

It appears to me that the definition of "pure" does not match up with how you apply it.
You say purity is "clean" and free of sin and moral wrong, but then later in your post you label things "pure" if they aid in your personal growth.
To me these are two different things.
