Finally I have found my purpose, now my challenge to myself will be to follow it. This is the very first time that a challenge feels good, like something to honour and what a challenge it will be. For some time now I have been entertaining the thought of starting my own school. By no means am I ready now but I feel a strange pull towards pursuing this. If there's anything like destiny then this is it. I can't get it out of my mind. I've got many idea's on how to do it. It seems that all my experiences up to this point are perfect for this. Its like coming home. Anyway, now we get to the practical aspects. How the HELL am I going to do this? To be honest I've got no idea. Seriously, its my purpose yet I know little about education. I know little about children, sure I've got a few idea's. No real direct practical experience to show for it. No formal education in this regard. So here I am. Wondering whether I should truly follow it. You see, although its a challenge and in a way I feel exhilerated to follow it. There is at the same time this sort of apprehension. Of fear perhaps. Not much just this slightly nervous feeling in my stomach. Its funny because the one reason why I want to do this is so simple; Because I know it can be done better and I know that I can do it better. Thats it, it can be better and I can do it. Thats why its my purpose. So simple and so elegant. Yet so profound. Anyway back to the practical. My current situation; College (dutch; HBO), Biology and medical laboratory research 4the year with atleast 2 years of study wasted on random time wasting. No money. 21 Years old. No experience with kids. The knowing that I can do it. Those are my qualifications right now. My plan: - Quit my current education and start a education towards becoming a teacher. - Get a job where I can interact with kids. - Build skills in regards to; Learning (read books, finish Phenomenal Memory course) Nutrition (good education should TEACH kids at a young age about nutrition) Time management Discipline Contacts with people in the industry, ask around what they would want to see changed. - Learn about business, this school will be run like a business the products being kids with a colossal headstart in life. - Learn about how kids interact together - Device a teaching method, I've got a few idea's but they'r radically different then anything else out there. - Learn about the various laws regarding this. - Start figuring out ways to get funding. - Continue meditating, continue toastmaster meetings. When I'm done with all this then I'll be further ahead atleast 5 years. You think I'm crazy? You think I'm nuts? Then your probably right. Every other thing I entertained about doing felt like a burden. Something to be suffered. This feels like liberation. I've had this idea for atleast 6 months now. At first it wasn't a clear idea. Just a urge to teach. A urge to create. A urge to learn. I explored it for a while but only found a vision that seemed impossible. So I abonded it again. Yet it seems to keep penetrating my consciousness every now and then. Yesterday was one of those days. For the next 3 hours I could think of nothing else. How marvelous. New idea's kept coming. Tumbling around in my mind. Somehow different then the last time. More profound in a way. I can't do this alone though. If I must I'd work alone on this untill I die. A lifetime. I prefer to get some help though. So help me. Give me suggestions. Give me more idea's. Give me more challenges to conquer. Give me encouragement like I need it. |

/me casts encouragement spell Good luck with all that. The kids need you. "No experience with kids." I suggest you work on improving that aspect... Have you heard all the stories of fatherly figures that helps kids grow? It can be anyone, the football coach, a gardener or that weirdo picking out bottles from the trash... They all help kids because they hang out with them and say stuff that goes straight to the heart. Just being a teacher doesn't help kids grow wise. You need to become close and personal. That cool dude that every kid who ever went to your school know and loves. Last edited by Trezker; 01-26-2008 at 03:48 PM. |

I admire your enthusiasm and dedication to your dream. My wife is a teacher and we've had several discussions about how our current public education system could be made better and more efficient. What I'm wondering about your idea is; are you aiming to change the way teachers teach, or creating a new model of education (including administration, fund usage, benchmarks, etc)? In other words, what exactly will your school do differently from the others available? I think you're going the right direction by becoming a teacher first. You'll get a great first-hand look at the current education system and learn what it takes to educate and develop relationships with children. I think it was John Stossel from 20/20 who did a news piece on overhauling our education system, which really got me excited about the potential for change. The first step is to believe it can be done! |

I'm working on that experience. Today I applied for a job at a kids entertainment center (freely translated Once I get a foot in the door I intend to stick myself in completely. They sounded like they need me. Quote:
This is the critical age for these young yedi's, learned young done old (dutch saying once again freely translated hehe). In the last 2 years I can teach some of the basic PD principles (goal setting, dreams that sorta thing) and some basic nutritional advice. The amount of adult kids that have no idea where they are heading or why is astounding. One third of the people in college education switch education in there first year (over here in the Netherlands) and its only increasing. Everyone seems to just go through to moves of reading this, dumping that in there minds only to forget it a few days later. Rinse repeating it untill they get a nice paper that says they've graduated. Almost everyone I speak to thinks there's something wrong with the system. Students agree that they'r poorly prepared for the 'real' world. The real education starts when they enter the work force. That formal education is useless is completely ridicilous. Right now I don't know enough about the current system to say concretely this and this I want to change into that. I'll probably end up reorganizing both the school system (benchmarks, paperwork basically) and the actual teaching. I intend to teach kids not just information but also tools for life mostly inspired from the Personal Development branch combined with nutritional advice this is a killer combination. People tend to understimate how much effect nutrition has on kids (and adults), I intend to give proper teaching regarding this. I'm first going to look into educating myself as a teacher, I need to learn the current system after all. No point in repeating the same mistakes or not use the things that work. During this time I will start setting up plans, gathering information, building contacts and skills that I need. I'm not taking this lightly. | ||

I was throwing around ideas on how to revolutionize education, which everyone seems to agree is sub par but I knew I couldn't work as a traditional teacher. I was thinking in terms of college age though but maybe I can inspire you. Since tuitions have gotten expensive very quickly, no one has presented an alternative to people. So I had the idea of an autodidact's club. An atmosphere of fun where people to "study", mostly skills and work on hacking something together a project. This place wouldn't seem like work, it'd be a cross between an art colony and school. Very informal. Sudsbury Valley Schools have developed a model? You'd probably love to work at a school like that. |
