"A great leader is one never seen, who never asks for thanks and never recieves it."

Perhaps for a great "taoist" leader, and even then, at best this is a necessary but not sufficient element. I'm sure that there are millions of people who are "never seen, never asks for thanks and never recieve it"....

They are a Great Leader, but it does not make them a GOOD leader.

Let's look at Ali's referenced 10 points...
1. The Leader must have a dream larger than those he/she leads.
"Larger" in what sense? The best leaders latch onto (or stumble into) the existing dreams of the masses. THIS is why they are so successful. They are taking the people where THE PEOPLE want to go anyway.

2. The Leader must have an attitude superior to those he/she leads.
With defining "attitude" this is hard to critique.

3. The Leader is responsible and admits when he/she has made a mistake.
Nope. Did Clinton admit he made a mistake? Did Bush?

4. The Leader is a decision maker.
Yes.

5. The Leader puts those he/she leads first.
Not necessarily. Stalin killed MILLIONS of his own people.

6. The Leader sets the example by being in the front of the pack.
Not necessarily. Was Bush on the front lines in Iraq?

7. The Leader displays a commitment to integrity and character.
Yes. Without the PERCEPTION of integrity and character people won't follow. With respect to reality.... another thread listed an interesting site about the "real" Tony Robbins....

8. The Leader strives for excellence in all things.
No. Just the things that matter.

9. The Leader displays a commitment to personal growth.
Not necessarily. As long as the followers respects them.

10. The Leader has the highest level of persistence and determination.
Yes. A leader must persist in leading to achieve thier vision.

All in all, these ten things seem also to confuse "leading" effectively with beign a "good" person. There are not many academic books on "leadership" per se, however since leadership is really just persuasion, anyone interested can look up psychology books on persuasion to get a very good understanding of what is required to get other people to do things.

So the question I guess is we dont really know of any current examples of good leaders in this day and age?

Also it is history that eventually judges people and its leaders.
