Default Life Purpose - Emotional Intelligence

I need some help from smart people.

I am training to be a coach and have some essay options that have been given to me. One of the options is to do an essay on ( how would a coach would elicit a clients life purpose)

My starting point was to do a google search on 'life purpose' and much to my surprise I got steve's posting. Even more surprising was that steve refered to emotional intelligence as being number one on his list.

Has anybody got any ideas on how to elicit life purpose.

Many Thanks

Tried Steve's approach, but it didn't quitte work.. I came up with answers like : I don't know (two times), to work, to learn, to do, to live, to have fun; I came up with a total of twelve answers before I didn't knew any answers anymore..

Didn't work for me either. I'm generally don't tend to feel extremes of emotion to that extent. I discovered my current purpose by observing how I felt while I was going about my day to day activities, and through that realised what I most enjoyed doing. Observing those feelings in the moment was a completely different experience to observing them while I thought/wrote about my experiences.

Plus I think it's important to pay attention to what a person feels about purpose itself. Is it something inherent? Is it divine? Does it change over time? Can someone choose for themself? ...I suspect that if you approach someone in a way that doesn't suit them, they'll resist whatever method you suggest, even if it would have worked with a different approach...

Doesn't this some kind of limit your (to be found) purpose to the things you do currently? What if you real purpose is something completely different?

Just a thought that popped-up in my mind though..

The purpose came from the things I was currently doing. I went looking for a different purpose and was constantly disappointed. If my "real" purpose is something different, whoever gave me that purpose isn't doing a very good job of helping me to find it... (I don't believe in pre-destined purpose btw. Not in a divine sense, but perhaps in the sense that our experiences allow us to develop a particular personality which is most suited to particular pursuits. I can be confident I've found my purpose because it fits what the totality of my experiences has created. Perhaps there's something else that fits as well, or fits better. If I find it I'll adopt that one instead. Until then I'm happy )
