| So, I recently returned from three months in the US, which was primarly about living with my fiancee, figuring out my life, and getting myself back on track. It was very useful! But now I'm home (England) again. I was lucky enough to walk into a basic job (checkouts at a supermarket) that allows me to pay the rent, and helped me pay off my debt. I've learned a lot from it, but now I'm ready for the next stage. Ideally, I want to work within publishing or web content, in a copywriting or editorial role. I've applied to a few places, but so far had no luck. I've sent my CV to a friend whose looked it over and gave some suggestions, and I've read a whole bunch of books about giving the right impression, writing good cover letters, etc etc. Sadly, there's a lot of competition, and I have no previous experience. (negative thought :/) I've been trying to build up alternative forms of income, putting google ads on my blog, starting a new focused blog, but ideally I need enough steady income that I can start saving up for a decent apartment, and the ability to support my fiancee when he comes here. Any tips or suggestions (or donations, hah) would be very much appreciated. I am, quite literally, starting with nothing, as everything I earned this month went on rent. |

| Hi There, Focus on your end point or your legacy rather than your job needs right now and then work backwards from that point. That's always the best way to approach it. If you don't have any experience in publishing enough to land a cush executive job behind a desk, no problem..... Just find a job that will cover the bills in a location where you will be exposed to the operations of the publishing industry. That's where the magic happens and that's where you need to be. Heck, one day you might be taking out the trash of a writer there and a few years later, you might be that writer's boss. But that's exactly the opposite of what people do. They say, "Oh that's impossible, I'll never land a job like that," and they settle for a job that they can get which they are never happy doing in an area not even remotely related to what their true passions are! Find your passion first and then figure out how to get yourself closer to it while still maintaining a life for yourself. |
