I am personally obsessed with startups and follow sites like Hacker News, Mixergy and TechCrunch on a daily basis.

Not a startup company proper, but I have done a magazine for the past 2 years (on a zero budget), which has levelled up my execution skills quite a bit.

You're a start up yourself even though you're an online magazine.

I see you have print books available on your site, have they been selling? If not, then consider coming up something your readers will want to buy.

The best way to find out what people want is to ask them. Set up a survey on your site, use a free service such as Survey Monkey, and ask your web traffic:

If we were to create something new that would help you xxx, what would you like to see offered on this site?

xxx = the results, experiences, or solutions your readers are looking for

Before you create anything, always figure out what people want. Steve just wrote a wonderful article pointing this out. Business = Market Demand. If there is no demand for what you're selling, then you won't have sales. And no sales = no money.

So find out what your readers want.

- What are they looking for?
- What do they need?
- What do they like about you?
- What are they willing to give you money for?

I've worked for several high-tech start ups over the past seven years, including ones who got VC funding. From experience, the more successful start-ups always asked:



- What do our customers want and how can I meet the demand?
- How can we help people experience the results they're looking for?
- How can we give people something they want or will eventually want?

And YOU are a start up, you're just as important as all the people you read about. Even if you have five customers, those five customers appreciate you. And that's all that matters
