So, here's the problem. I needed to move out of the house that I live in. I could go on about what was wrong but let's move on from that. Any ways, I lived in a house with a month to month lease and I had to give a 30 day notice before I chose to move out. I told my roommate on the 17th of October that I was moving out, giving him a 14 day notice. This was my fault! However, I really needed to move out, and I really wanted to move into this new place that opened up. Anywho, if we were able to find someone to occupy the room before the 1st of November then I would be able get my deposit back. I was told to find someone to rent out the room, but as I'll be leaving, one of my other roommates took up the task of finding a new roommate. There was three of us and the girl who's supposed to be in charge is either doing nothing, or weirding people out, leaving me in a tough position because it doesn't seem like we'll have a new roommate by the 1st if this keeps going on like this. If she can't find a roommate or says that everyone doesn't seem fit for the place, it's going to cost me my deposit. What am I supposed to do? The room I was renting was 480 a month. The deposit was 480 (one month's rent). |

Well... either you keep it or you don't... are you going to be totally unable to recover financially ever if you lose the deposit? Do your best, and leave the rest in the hands of the Universe. |

Why not work to the 30 day's notice deal, pay for the extra two weeks to 14th Nov as if you were still living there. Then you'll effectively get half your deposit back. Here's your reality check (IMO): They're not doing it just to withhold your money. They benefit from finding a good flatmate and that's their focus. They're the ones who have to live with this new person, and it's part of the contract that they have 30 days to find someone new. Claiming they are "trying to steal" your deposit tells me you're coming at this with blinkers on, you're playing the victim when objectively I could say that you're the one giving them grief... You're rushing them into finding a new flatmate (we all know, living with the wrong flatmate can be hell which may lasts for months) and you're demanding money back that you're not owed as you didn't give the full notice. I hope that if you can see the reality of the situation, you'll play fair with your flatmates and can work together for an amicable solution. With your current attitude, it's no wonder your flatmates aren't bending over backwards for you. Contracts are in place to make things fair for everyone. You cant break a contract just because it suits you.... |
