I want to start my own business, something that deals with art, games, books or any other type of fictional entertainment. However I don't have any idea what to do because I don't know how to provide others value with these things. It's not like people need stuff like this, but fiction is one of my biggest interests. I want to work with something I enjoy not some random business idea I'm not passionate about.

| Really? If it's so important to you that you want your work to revolve around it, then why would it not also be incredibly important to other people as well? Imagine your own life without art, games, and fiction: would it be as good as the life your living now? Could you give it all up until you die and be just as happy without it, or do you "need" it to fully express your interests?

Huh, never thought of it like that. Well no, I don't think so, fiction is a way I can express something in my mind, something that isn't necessarily possible in this physical world. It allows me to tell stories, create worlds and share them with others. Fiction can bring me inspiration, and give me a piece of that childhood joy. maybe wonder or curiosity too. I guess I wanna create those feelings for others too. Hmmm....without fiction or really imagination, how would we invent anything new anyway?. So yeah, I guess I do need it. So...I guess the best place to start is to come up with ideas that pertain to fiction see what people will buy or have an interest in? Last edited by Dallaz; 10-16-2011 at 01:28 AM.

Find whatever it is that you can spend countless hours doing, and just do that to the best of your ability and in a way that is most fun for you, and THEN try to monetize it afterwards, after you're already really talented and you know you have value to offer. As far as I see it, there are a million unpredictable factors on what makes something more or less marketable, so don't make what you think other people need as a major factor in what you do. It's important to make a choice based on what you personally do best and what you can stand doing day in and day out. Let's say, for example, you like to draw. Would it make more sense to just draw and draw until you can draw at a professional quality and THEN look at the options on how to sell your art? Or would it make more sense to make beginner-quality drawings now and try invent schemes to sell them?

Canadian is right, you should first find what you love doing. I know money is a compelling factor and people rush into making money no matter what. But these things actually work backwards: you do something you want to do, then you are able to create value, and then value is given back to you (in the form of money). I would also suggest to narrow down your ideas. If you like fiction, what kind of fiction? Literature? Movies? If you like games... are we talking videogames? RPGs? And if so... narrow down even more: what kind of RPG? Cheers, Daniel. |

You are at least on the right track in terms of IDing the area that you want to be involved in. Now it's a matter of finding some niche areas within that field that you can market. I would suggest that you do some research in the community groups that involves this field to find out what people want in terms of product or services. What are they looking for? Then knowing this, you might be able to fill those needs. That's how to zero in on good business niches for yourself.
