Does that major you took in college have to do with your current career path? I have heard people say that, after college, they ended up in a career totally unrelated to what they went to school for. ..so i just wanted to know the experiences of people on this board.

I did this actually the other way around - I did not end up studying the same thing in university that I already had made a career in. I had worked in computer science (as a programmer) a little over two years before starting my major in university. As I was pretty fed up with computers - working in the field was enough, I couldn't stand studying it also - I decided to go study economics. Although I have no idea, in what field I might be working when I finally finish my major. |

it seems that Programming is the only field that you can work on without getting a Bsc degree in Computer Science or CIS whatever... for it ... and really i don't know why but it seems any one can be a software engineer even if he studied literature or history. anyway ... for me i wanted to be a developer since i was in my high school so although i had the chance to study pharmacology in the university and i had the chance to study any field in engineering as well (i hade a very high average in high school). i decided to follow my passion and went to the science faculty (it was then renamed to Information Technology) and i studied Computer Science |

Of course, I wouldn't try to be a geneticist without the appropriate (Masters) degree. | |

yup there are other fields that you can work on without a relevant university degree i think this is maybe why dr's and engineers are looking down to programmers ... they know you can not be a dr without a medicine degree and you can not be an electrical engineer without having an engineering degree (or at least this is the case in my country) however , every one can be a developer but at the end if you like what you do then it does not matter what other people think |

I graduated with an English degree last year and currently work as a software tester. Studying English had the side effect of making me sick of reading literature, so now I only read books on business, technology, and personal development. |

My current career is aligned with my College major, Information Systems. This didn't happen by accident. I actively choose IT jobs because I thought I "had" to. Looking back I should have been open to other opportunities.
