Default Hello, seek advice

At the moment i am educating myself to be a plumber, but i have a hard time looking past the financial gain of being one, on the one hand i consider becoming a plumber, while on the other side i think about becoming a fisherman,
my question is as such, what is better, working every day nine to four, or on the other hand working for three months and then spend my time traveling?
What do you think and what would you have chosen?

Hi zabjoa,

It's really a big lifestyle choice, isn't it?

At the moment I work on an even time roster (7 days on 7 off, 7 nights on 7 off - 12 hour shifts) and I absolutely love it.

A few questions:
- How much time off do you get after three months working?
- Do you have any family commitments (wife/children)?
- Is there a huge pay difference?
- Do you think you could handle working for three months straight on a boat, living with the same people that you work with?

Also take into account that commercial fishing is one of the most dangerous occupations.

Well MissMo, after three month i can recuperate for as long as i need to, also i have no family so I am pretty much free, as for the money, if i work for half a year then i get about about seventy percent of what i would have earned in a year as a plumber. When it comes to working with the same people for three months, i do love people and i also love working so I am disposed to like that kind of working, the main reason why i bring up this question is because i do not like school, i just cant bear the idea of someone telling me what to think, so i figured why get an education in something i might not even like when i can work at a ship for three months, and when coming back to Norway i can travel the globe and do all sort of shenanigans, oh and as for the safety issue, me being me, i have done far more dangerous things for far less gain, so it does not bother me.

It sounds like you have already made your decision or at least know where your heart lies. The only other advice that I might be able to give you is have you considered about owning your own business and hire someone to work for you?

I am sure that you know that there is more than 2 options out there. What has led you to believe that you must choose between one or the other?

If you can recuperate for as long as you want to, why not do both? Work for three months, chill out and then study for a bit before going back to work. It might take you a lot longer to finish your studies, but if you're enjoying your lifestyle it doesn't really matter.

Its a matter of personal preference

Some may choose to work nine to four because in that way they will see their family everyday or maybe they would feel purpose less without something to do on a daily basis.

On the other hand, If finances is your priority you can work the three month job and even add some sort of freelance work during you time off.

In the end it boils down back to personal preference.

It's all about your personal preference. I'd go at the sea. Let me give you one suggestion. Don't spend all money after successful fishing seasons like some fishermen do.

As a writer, I say go fishing!

It's just about your personality. Some like "no news is good news" (steady, nine-to-five type) while others prefer "feast or famine" (winner-takes-all sorts)....

You sound like you'd much rather go fishing.

Or why not, indeed, do as Miss Moo suggests? I'm sort of doing that now, somewhat.
