Default Finding a designer for e-book covers

I'm writing a series of fantasy/sci-fi books, the first of which should be ready around the end of the year. I intend self-publishing on kindle.

My question is does anyone know where I could find someone to help me design the covers? I think I can write well - of course - but I'm certainly not good at visual art. I'm not sure what I want, except I don't just want patterns or shapes. Perhaps pictures.

Also, does anyone know how much it's likely to cost me. I have 5 books in the series, and would like to buy all 5 in one go - if possible.

Thanks for any reply.

That depends on your work and how much you charge? Do you have any examples of the kind of art you do?

Hi newmark,

you could use outsourcing sites like odesk.com, elance.com or guru.com

I personally have experience with odesk.com. You simply post a job offer and tell in detail what exactly you want and how much you are willing to pay. Then independent contractors can apply for your job and tell you how much money they want. Some will also attach samples of their work, so you can see their skill level. Then you can choose the one you like best.

Please be careful and make sure that you only pay when you are happy with the results. (So check the contract beforehand.)

Regarding the costs: I think you will be surprised and amazed at how cheap good work can be. Look for similar projects like yours and see how much people would pay for it.

You could also use fiverr.com if you are more adventurous.

Hi,

I know from your thread that you want to earn $1000 in 15 days.

I want to give you some advice if you don't mind:

Would you hire someone you absolutely don't know? Probably not.

So you say that you would do it well. But how should someone know how good you are without actual proof?!? So please think about what business owners need to know about you in order to hire you? What would they want to know before they make their decision? If you find good answers to these questions you will have a much easier time making your $1000.

Good luck and kick some ass.

True, but I can design some sample designs and if he's not interested he can find someone else. I really do not have any problem spending time in creating the sample designs. I used to design a few years back. But now I am into full time software development. I haven't gotten any samples either. But at the end of the day, it's his wish.

We can have it done at the studio in my company. They also did my book (selling well now). Do note that the success of a book can depend on the cover, and that a good cover it more than just a nice image and some text. In the end, it's like package design!

Drop me a line at s.bakker@wowworks.eu if you're interested.

My partner does all kinds of graphic and web design work.

His latest project - The Lucid Dreaming FAST TRACK:

If you email him with a quick design brief he will give you a quote. Contact Pete Casale (aka Creative Media).

Hiring a stranger requires trust which is why I always go through referrals or freelancer sites which hold the money in escrow.

Hope that helps
Rebecca

Thank you for all of your replies.

Gigamasterhammer - I'd not thought about outsourcing sites for visual art, but this sounds like a good idea. I'd like to see some examples of their work first, and be able to compare prices.

Rebecca - Does Pete have a website where I can take a look at his work? Apart from 'Art of Lucid Dreaming.'

I have a friend who does absolutely awesome graphic design work (and does graphic design for Adidas actually), who does freelance work on the side. And I figure she'd do it for a fair price (perhaps I could even let her I know I sent you her way if you want).

I've had her do stuff for me in the past (she does it for me for free because we're buds )...

I'll PM you a link to her website.

Yeah, absolutely. The good contractors will show you samples of their previous work.

I hope you find a great designer for your e-book covers.
