How to Master Writing Essays?

I am looking to go back to University but first I need to train up my weaknesses because I want to do well.

I am looking to get a Bachlor of science and afterwards looking to study naturopathic medicine which has a GPA range of 2.7 to 4.0 in the acceptance interview. So not only am I looking to become proficient but reach a strong level before starting on this journey.

One major area I want to get good at is the ability to write post graduate essays.

I would like to have the ability to write essays without a high stress factor (good flow while completing essays) and also have the essays get a high mark at a post graduate level.



I am assuming that the two areas of focus need to be grammar and the art of actually writing and completing essays? Would this be a correct statement?


Does anyone have any recommendations for websites, books, DVDs, personal attitude, clubs, courses where I can master this ability? I am looking for multiple resources.


The school I am looking to attend has a pre writing and grammar courses aim to prepare students get ready for writing at the post graduate level. Which I will most likely sign up for.

The two courses are:

English 155 : Courses : Athabasca University (Not part of degree)


English 255 : Courses : Athabasca University (Required for the degree)

Your university should have a writing center.

I used to be a terrible essay writer but when I was literally "forced" to use the writing center I became an immaculate essay writer. Now, I write essays for other students in my spare time and help correct them.

Haven't gotten anything below an A so far.

The writing center was able to zone in my problem areas and fix everything wrong. For example, I had this issue with being verbose. The tutor would tell me specifically "180, your writing is redundant, like you say 'overly verbose' when you could just say verbose."

These are the kind of things they can help you with. Books don't really help. I've read the Kaplan books for good writing and a lot of it is general stuff but it doesn't help. My essay writing has become so good that I'm constantly complimented on style and strength of argumentation.

I'd say check out the writing center of your university. Go there with some writing samples and they can tell you everything you're doing right and wrong.

The school has coaches that help you when writing the essays, they don't edit they highlight what you need to work on and can coach you on 3 patterns that don't match up per submission, and you can submit once per assignment and they have courses that are geared to help you build the skills for writing the essays.

Another question that came to mine, so you can get someone to proof read, coach and edit your essay before you submit one? Can you hire someone outside the school like a virtual assistant to help you in this area?

Also - I realize that just getting someone to proofread won't benefit it when you need to write an essay on the spot during an actual exam, and that developing the skills to write properly will be required then.
