Why do retail sales slow down in summer?

Pardon my noob question, but why do retail sales slow down in the summer time? If the weather is good, why would people be spending less in retail stores?

Well for one thing, Christmas and Thanksgiving are usually the two biggest sales periods of the year since everyone is buying gifts. And those are both in winter.

There aren't really any summer holidays that are attached to gift-giving. Nobody gives gifts for the 4th of July.

I guess people are spending so much money on vacations that the last thing they want to do it spend money on retail haha.

Another thing that could add to the basic dollar value of sales is that summer clothes tend to be lighter such a t-shirts and shorts, whereas winter is pants and jackets, and heavier clothes tend to cost more in general.

Simply they purchased all they needed for the summer in the springtime and are out doing things during the summer. The summer is more about leisure than shopping.
