Mrey is on a distinguished road
Default I have $40k and i want to invest ATLEAST half of it...

Cliffs:

- UK citizen want to make a move to living in the states (specifics of "where" aren't TOO important right now, but let's say Vegas)

- I have 40k in U.S dollars... 10 of which i'll need to live on for a while so i'd like to invest 30k into something worthwhile

- I currently work in business to business sales but also have a Personal Trainer qualification which is internationally recognised.

Any help?

Thanks, i'm desperate

And I'm desperate for investments. I control a private foreign exchange investment fund that's doing quite well. Even won a forex contest boasting an 80% return in a little over 3 months: LitheInvestor Becomes the Second Winner of the Demo Cup Badge! - InformedTrades Does this sound interesting to you?

do you already own any property?
if you do, would it be worth investing the money in an improvement in that property to increase the returns from it?
You could take a class, learning is always a great investment.
Personally I have a managed fund and my next step is real estate.
I dont know the state of the market where you are but whichever way you decide to spend as much time as you can absorbing every bit of information available before you make a move.

What are you desperate for? Desperation always equals losing. 30K is not really that much, you should get a job and add to the nest egg.

Dollar cost average into a diversified portfolio perhaps, funds, stocks, bonds, gold. If you're good do arbitrage on undervalued small cap equities. If you get 15% regularly, you are a god on wall street. if you get much more than that, you eventual demise will be just as spectacular.

It's a bit concerning that only 4 funds in that long list are in the green. The majority of them would have been better off just putting their money into a bank account. Yikes!

Mrey, have you considered furthering your education? Investing in yourself is a good way to go.

Those numbers aren't surprising for that sort of highly leveraged trading but they don't necessarily mean much. More useful metrics are the ratio of gains to largest drawdown, the ratio of total wins to total losses, or Sharpe ratio. Those kinds of metrics factor out the leverage.

You also need to know how many trades are in the sample population being discussed. If it's two, that's not very statistically relevant. Anyone can get lucky twice. If it's 200 and the results are dependent on the whole population rather than 1 or 2 standouts, that's more interesting.

One thing you'll learn is that it's difficult to explain the high rates of return on capital possible in futures/FX trading (or for that matter, most other gambling enterprises) to civilians. Years of watching the return on poorly managed mutual funds has conditioned them as to what's possible.

I think Curtis was joking, but I've had people literally become convinced I was engaged in some sort of criminal enterprise.

I was joking because all semester I've heard from my finance teacher about getting returns of like 10-15% in stocks per year, and here you are talking about getting relatively massive 80% returns in 3 months.

Thus the "you must be doing something illegal" joke.
