You will definitely want to have backlinks to your website to increase your pagerank. The key is having "relevant" backlinks. A site selling pet food would want other pet related sites linking to it and not landscaping companies etc.

It was once explained to me in terms of this analogy:

Think of two research papers on the same topic.

If there are two research papers and one has 3 references cited (backlinks) and another site on that same topic has 1,000 references (backlinks)....the site with 1,000 references is seen by Google has being more relevant and providing more valuable content - increasing pagerank.

You may want to search for sites that relate to the product catagories you are offering - medical etc.

Wish you the best,

Robert

PS. You can also create a blog - link it to your site and/or add content to your site to encourage repeat visitors....

Write good content that people want to link to.

Find sites that share similar interests and link to them or comment on their forums or blog to attract their atention.

Stuff like that.

Dropping your link at forums is NOT the best way.

Having something worth linking to, and then letting those in your target audience know about it IS the best way, but it is hard, time consuming, frustrating, etc.

If you're in it for the long-term, however, a good year of really hard work should get you somewhere, eventually.
