Default Company Website Perceptions?

What are your thoughts on a company that has a standard template for a website? I mean, they would add their own pictures and text and change it around a bit, but it is fairly obvious they used a template.

Do you think less of them? Does it hurt their reputation?

I'm not talking about a national corporation or a website design company that does this (although I have seen website design companies use standard templates, lol), but just your standard small business?

I don't know, maybe I'm just too picky about things.

I have no problem with this if it looks nice. Much better they use a pre-fab template that actually looks decent and is tested for multiple browsers than hack together their own ugly HTML with a ten year old copy of Frontpage and no concept for design or organization.

Really, I don't think it would be obvious for most people that they used a template. My mom wouldn't know the difference.

The only thing that really bugs me for some reason are those stock pictures of professional looking people acting like they are doing something. If those people aren't actually your people, get rid of those pics.

Depends how generic it is, but i would consider it common sense if it gave over the right information and looked professional enough...

Content usually trumps all. If the website has what people are looking for, they will overlook bad designs.

Also the average internet user doesn't even know what a template is, so I doubt many business (except for maybe web design companies) would ever give it a second thought.
