Default How to find a financial planner?

I do most of my investing through self-service discount brokerage accounts (I own mostly index funds and CDs). I want to talk to a financial planner about my asset mix, but I don't want to open an account with him/her and pay 1% (or more) of my assets in fees every year. I'm willing to pay a couple hundred dollars for an hour's worth of good advice.

How can I find a good financial planner / investment adviser who would work on an hourly basis?

In many countries, the term Financial Planner can be used by pretty much anyone, so the best way is usually to get references from other people.

I would also suggest picking up a decent easy-to-read book on financial planning, such as Financial Planning for Dummies or something, so you have a general idea of the field. I'm a strong believer in doing research when it comes to money, so I'd also look up books and websites on the topic and just get a survey of the different opinions out there.

I have a financial planner. He only deals in high net worth people and is a "fee only" type, so he is not encouraged to sell other companies particular wares. I have money under my own control too and will give 3 years. If he out performs me, he stays. If he doesn't, we manage our money, but use him on an hourly basis for advice. He's very good, the top notch in town. I think it depends on how much you have. there is a point in wealth at which your decisions have "larger" impact than at lower levels of wealth. Taxes and estate planning especially. www.GoldenPondWealth.com is the advisor by the way.

Hi

he job of a finance manager is a huge balancing act that requires a vast pool of knowledge. Knowing about stocks, dividends, bonds and maturity levels is the just the beginning of the job requirements. A company and organization wants to make sure that anyone who holds shares in the company will be able to profit considerably from the success of the company. The financial manager is in charge of making all this happen.

Financial managers oversee the preparation of financial reports, direct investment activities, and implement cash management strategies. Their duties vary with their specific titles, which include controller, treasurer, credit manager, and cash manager.
