Hi, Any recommendations on hosting services? It looks like Godaddy has a lot to offer (seems like it has Joomla and Vanilla Forums, for instance), but I know service and reliability are important. This is just for a small site (at first, hope it grows). I'm far more interested in creating content, I'm not concerned much about the intricacies of building something from scratch. Thanks for any help. Aaron |

I run Switch Stories | Home on Hostgator and it works pretty fine. If you plan to have something small in the beginning it will suits you. In cheap shared hosting reliability and customer support is important. I am satisfied with the way they handle my requests (an additional IP, for example, costs only $1/month). Their chat is very useful as well. You receive the full control in the cPanel but I am not sure if you have out-of-the-box installations of popular Open Source platforms like Joomla. I am sure that bluehost.com might be worth looking into - I have some good experience with them too. Take a look at this website: it compares all the best hosting providers: Best Web Hosting Reviews.Top 10 Web Hosting Ratings & Best Cheap Hosts I first used cirtexhosting, but was not satisfied with the quality of their product and definitely not with their support. Now I'm with Pacifichost. They have a great product and the best support I have ever had from any online product! |

Another vote for Hostgator - I use it on Half-a-dozen Monkeys and a number of other sites and they have been very good. Had a few problems setting some things up due to me clicking random buttom and their help desk has been superb. Rich |

I use GoDaddy for domain names. I've also used their hosting. What annoyed me with their hosting, while good, is that even when you've *paid* for hosting, they still bombard you with adverts and crap in the user interface. Listen I've paid, I don't want that stuff in my face. I got shot of them for hosting. I would recommend pipeten.com for hosting. They have a sweet, clean, ad and crap free interface, and some good deals.

I've had ipowerweb, bluehost, and I currently have Hostgator. My favorite of the three thus far has been Hostgator. Their support has been pretty awesome. ipowerweb sucks a big one. There's frequent server issues that cause downtimes and their support isn't really all that great. Bluehost was pretty decent as well, with little to no downtimes, but their support isn't really wowing either. Hostgator, by far, has been my best hosting experience. |

Thanks for all the input, especially those who posted some sites that they run. That gives me a great feel for what is the actual finished product looks like. I did want to ask if there's a different between Linux and Microsoft hosting. I assume that we're just talking about the back end, so there shouldn't be a difference. But if I'm not programming on a Linux box, does that mean I can't work with Linux servers? |

Before I moved my sites to a friends server I used Hostgator and I was really pleased with their reliability, support and most of all their price. As for your question regarding Windows vs Linux servers, it doesn't matter which OS you code your websites in. I have my websites on a Linux server now and I'm programming both in Windows and Linux. So don't worry |

I found the bluehost support to be good, but slow. Sometimes I had to wait up to 24 hours to get an answer. Even when I contacted the online chat support, they often told me to sent an email to support, which meant I had to wait for an answer. I'm now at pacifichost and their support is unbelievably good. They'll do anything to help you immediately. Even with email support you'll get an answer in less than half an hour, 24/7. I'm really satisfied with them! |
