Default Please help me narow my niche :)

My biggest issue right now is I’m not sure what direction I want to take the site. Here are a few ideas I have. I’d love to hear more ideas, and what you think of the ideas I have.

I want the main focus to be about my songs, and I want my songs to be the primary revenue source (I’d rather not have advertising, and sell individual songs). I also want to use the blog to book performances.

However, there’s no way I can keep fresh content going if I wait until I have songs to post. I want to post at least a song a week, but that leaves 5-6 days of no material. Not good. Here are some ideas I have in addition to selling my music.

• A personal site with my music- Meaning I would write bout whatever tickles my fancy. I love to make people laugh, so I’ve thought about trying to write funny and entertaining post between posting songs.

• Using it as a journal into my development as a songwriter/performer- Not really sure what direction this could take yet. But use it to show where I am now, and post where I want to be. Along the way I’ll share tips and things I’ve learned about songwriting, performing, playing guitar, creativity, confidence in music, the works.

• Selling information products- This is similar to the above. I’d like to write about songwriting, and I have a few ideas for songwriting products. So, between post maybe I could share what material I have, and use it to promote my ebooks, etc.

• Applying music and creativity lessons to whatever people are doing-This would probably require a heck of a lot of work, but feels like it has great potential.

If you came to my site, like the songs, but weren’t interested in songwriting/performing, what else would you like to see? What would motivate you to keep coming back to the site?

The problem I see with the above is that I’m spreading myself to thin. I almost feel I need to get into tiny niches. Do I set up a blog for songwriting, a blog for performing skills, a blog about creativity, and one blog to promote my songs? Or would it be ok to mix them all together?

What do you think of the above ideas? What else would you suggest?

Could you look at the posting I have now and offer any suggestions? Would I be penalized if I had the youtube video before text? What do you think of my selling method? After I get multiple songs, would I be better of setting up a separate page with a shopping cart, or should I go with folks impulse and try to get them right away? Would I need an audio example, even though they can preview the full song through Youtube (the versions for sale would be different, as I’d record guitar and voice separately)?

Phew, that was a mouthful. If you made it all the way through, congrats

Thanks for reading, and doubly thanks for responding!

Chris Dover Music ? I sooooooo wish I had a witty tagline to put here

Here's an idea to consider. Instead of running your own blog, and having to create content, which is what seems to be the issue here, why not focus on what you do best and love most - creating songs/music. You could then sell them through other people's sites. Same with info products. If you feel compelled to write about those things, create e-books and have others sell them for you through their sites. OK, they will take 50% commission, but it can still work out well for you. You could still have a static site, and perhaps a blog, but you wouldn't feel compelled to update it all the time, leaving you to concentrate on what you're really interested in.

Exactly, my first thought also was: Focus on what you really love doing, don't worry about what others say you really have to do in order to be successful, financially and otherwise. I have no more tips right now, but if I check back in here later or tomorrow there may be more.

Just this...

Follow your passion, do what you really love, don't overthink it. Start doing, then you'll see if and where you have to adjust your approach.

Also, check out some other successful music artists... Kina Grannis is a great example of someone who's made it very far just using her Blog and I don't think she had daily updates there... more like weekly or so. Kina Grannis

@codefreeze

Thanks for your reply. The problem isn't really the content, it's what kind of content. Because if I start blabbing on about everything I'm interested in the site will be all over the damn place I keep hearing that picking a niche is the best way to go, but, I dunno, I gotta figure out how to work in that niche.

Maybe I should just start throwing **** around and see what sticks, I don't know.

Besides, as far as selling my music, I'd still have to promote it (it does no good to have music for sale if no one knows about it). I also want to build up so I can do performances, so I need something of my own.

OH, I'm sure I'll do affiliate stuff if I do info products.

@colonel

Thanks for your reply.

Yeah, Kina, she has several advantages over me damn it! She's young, hot, and has a lovely voice. I'm kinda lacking in all three.

But yeah, she is inspiring. Her and Jonathan Coultron too.

I guess I'll just really have to find my niche and see what sticks. Go with the fearless method and post what means something to me and figure out who else it works for.

Ahh fun fun
