Default The Office

Anyone else here watch this series?

A few years ago I saw the original UK version and loved it. Ricky Gervais just cracks me up. Shortly afterwards, the US version premiered but I found its first season lacking in comparison to the original. Then in the second season it became very funny. I just finished the third season which is the best by far. The show just keeps getting better and better.

Michael Scott & Dwight Struth are the two funniest characters on TV, IMHO.

Its pretty good. I still like the original British version a lot better.

Anyone watch Ricky Gervais' new show, Extras, on HBO?

I saw the first season. I liked it. See, I don't like laughing at people doing embarressing things, so it always take me a little bit of time to warm up to the characters enough to laugh at their stupidity. Even though I know that the stupidity is a joke. So I don't know how much I liked Extras till I watch more of it, but I liked what I saw of it.

The other night I watched the XMAS reunion special from the Brit version over again. I first saw it two years ago. This time it creeped me out because there is definitely a strong undercurrent of rage in Ricky Gervais' David Brent character.

OTOH, Michael Scott is basically a happy but insecure bumbler who is capable of rising to the occasion when, for example, a big sale to the county is required.

I think the difference between the two versions is that David Brent spends the entire series just waiting for his inevitable firing because he knows that he's not up to the job. He doesn't even try to be productive but prefers to spend his work hours day-dreaming about being a rock star or motivational speaker. But he also knows that he's BSing not only the world but himself about his abilities. In contrast, hapless Michael Scott is just barely good enough to hold onto his job and desires nothing more than to be loved by everyone.

Both versions are brilliant in their own way.

I love the Office. I think the US series is much better, but just in the sense its had more time to make the characters what they are.

I am also not a huge fan of british humor, but the UK Office was still great..

I've loved the office since it first came out. It's my type of humor.

Have you seen the episode when Dwight addresses the companywide sales reps? He does this Hitleresque diatribe that's so bad is brilliant...and everyone ends up loving it.

And then Michael tries to leech off his popularity afterwards. Genius episode.

What's Dwight's title? Assistant (to the) General Manager?

Yeah I like sophisticated real world humor like the office. There are so many lame comedies in theaters and even lamer sitcoms.

I just finished watching the Brit version for the second time and now can't stop calling everything "rubbish" in a Cockney accent.
