This is an ebook based on my oldbagofcairo blog so photos of stuff in Egypt are appropriate. To illustrate a couple of posts which I am jazzing up for the ebook, and where I don't have something appropriate in my own collection, I have found various online on travel blogs and the like and been emailing for permissions. I haven't had anyone say no yet and most people actually express pleasure at the idea. So, my question: for a few where the photos were posted online several years ago, and I have emailed the only contact available - joining the blog sites where necessary - and had no response after 2 chases, I'm thinking of going ahead and using the photos (giving full acknowledgement as to source obviously). What would you do? What would you do if it was your photo and you had forgotten about it and came across it 10 years down the line or whatever? (Given that you had indeed posted it on the internet already yourself otherwise I wouldn't have found it!) |

That's an excellent question that all internet entrepreneurs are faced with. With my Diet-Delivered.com, I purchase my images because it's a niche that has tons of appropriate pictures for sale. AustinConcertTickets.net is an entirely different story.. so I find myself in your shoes. I'll share what I do, but I'm not saying it's right for you.. On all the photos where I can find credit, I give the credit. Sometimes, that means even just saying 'this photo is from such and such website.' Then in my Disclosure, I state that to the best of my ability, I give credit AND website visitor is free to contact us to give credit. Hope this helps.. BTW.. I did have an author one time, write me indignant that I 'stole' her piece. First off, I DID have her name included for the credit, but she just didn't see it. Second, we became great friends and she contributed regularly to my site. Last edited by WorkitSmart; 04-13-2010 at 04:09 PM. |
