You wouldn't really get genuine followers that way. It's better to be patient and get quality not quantity.

I highly dislike ideas like this as it increases the noise and I don't care about such contests. If any of those people I follow on twitter start doing things like that regularly, I would lose interest in following them.

I'd say it depends on what it is. If you give something that's highly relevant to your business/blog and only a true fan would appreciate then that seems fine with me.

Giving out random crap will just bolster your follower numbers.
