Or know anyone who has? For the past couple of years I've been struggling with making a career change. The change will be from Information Technology to General Contracting. I have over 10 years in IT and couple years(part time)in the construction field. There are several issues I keep coming back to. For instance the pay cut and some of the conveniences of working in an office. Then there is the issue of an upcoming housing bust. I went through the technology burst and don't want to go through another industry crash. Also, I'm 32 and feel that my window of opportunity and ability to make big changes/mistakes is closing. However the thought of working in a cube farm for the next 30 years makes that pain in my chest hurt even more. |

Follow the 'pain' in your heart and become a general contractor I know there will be a learning curve that you will have to go through and some sacrifice but if you are happier in the long term, isn't it worth it? You talk of the approaching 'house crash'..says who? Even is there is one don't you think you could be on the opposing side and snap up some bargains?...remember one man's trash is another man's gold. Find a niche within general contracting and mine it. Look at what your competitors are not doing/not doing well enough and excel at it..over deliver and underpromise....gets 'em every time. If your USP is excellent service, then excel at it. As a fellow forumer put it.."Go out on a limb..isn't that where the fruit is?" |

Dwane, You're in the same boat as I am. I am currently in the medical field, but I am highly dissatisfied and seeking a change. I am taking IT training (A+,N+, MCSA/MCSE) through the end of this year so I can change careers into this field. I'm not sure which direction I'l go once I get my foot in the door (i.e. networking, security, web development, etc) but all I know is I need a change and am interested in trying this field. My situation is opposite of yours...I have labored with my hands since I was young (welder/machinist; firefighter/paramedic; and currently supervisory in medical device industry). My ultimate goal/dream with the IT field is to start some type of business(s) where I can work from anywhere in the world via computer (i.e. websites, server hosting, consulting, whatever). Hopefully this will work out for me. As I get older I don't want to be a "laborer" and lean more towards a more comfortable and flexible career. Construction is always a good field to get into. If you do quality work and treat the customers well, you will stay busy and make a good living. There are so many options: general contractor, home remodeling, new construction, specialization-carpentry, plumbing, flooring, roofing, sheetrock, electrical, etc). Find what you excel at and enjoy and dive in. Good luck. |

Speaking from my own experience and that of my partner: change to what you want to do most and do your homework. If you start doing things on the side already or parttime you can grow into it. Sometimes its worthwile checking out your realistic financials bfeore taking 'the plunge'. Life is not predictable but I reckon you do best and make most in doing what you love, not resenting what you have to do. (Did you read Steve's blogs on IM etc?) Career changes can be made. Find people who can help you, do your networking, go for it. be smart about it though "Trust in Allah but always tie your camel". You get the idea... |
