Default Full-time employee/Part-time entrepreneur - How to deal?

I have my own businesses (two websites, karaoke, and music instructor) that I am building on the side, but I also work a full-time job that I honestly do not care for. Like anyone else in my position, I do not care for my "day job" and was wondering if there were any others like me and how you deal with working a job you don't like while building your side businesses to become your permanent day jobs?

How do you deal with being a full-time employee/part-time entrepreneur? I really need help with this because I do not like any part of my job (except the checks) and only stay here (for now) for that reason...the checks. How do you deal and make it work?

And for those who have passed this stage...did you just up and quit your job depending on the Universe to provide or did you stay until all was well w/your own businesses (steady stream of income) before leaving?

Please share. Thanks.

Hi Will,

I'm also working full-time while developing a budding business of my own. I can't share much on this topic on a public forum, but please feel free to email me if you'd like to have a conversation about this offline but from someone else who probably has some challenges in common.

Good luck!

I was in your position two years ago. I kept my job for one looong year before I finally quit. The smartest thing I did was save as much as I could during that year so I had some money in the bank when I quit. I also dramatically decreased my expenses so I didn't need as much income.

There came a point when I had to quit in order to keep growing my business. But it took years for me to get to that point.

Here are some things to think about:
- could you do your job part time? so you won't lose all of your income at once.
- could you do part-time consulting work for another employer?
- could you find a part-time job doing _anything_ to free up some more time to work on your business without losing all of your income?
- how can you decrease your expenses? (move in with a relative, stop eating out, sell your car)

PM me if you want to talk more.

I believe that a decisive factor is to pick an industry which will permit you to work on your business project incrementally without having to ditch your full-time job before you are sure that your business will take you where you want to be.

It's like catching two rabbits at the same time. No one will remain an employee in this world if it's workable.

It's very easy to deal with. I did it the same way: quit the job, and be an entrepreneur fulltime AND parttime at the SAME time.

I had a full-time job 2 years ago, and I hated it and quite. So i start my own business. I think if you could afford your living by working on your own business, why don't you just concentrate on this and make it better?

Will if you look at what I wrote here I was in a similar situation (except I actually liked my job ) but I had started a side-business because I knew I could not depend on the "company" to take care of me.

You are doing the smart thing and need to realize that your full time job is basically your funding source for the business that you are starting.

Do you have a business plan? I would suggest you plan on developing your business and save money so at some point you can leave your job and transition to work your business full time.

In the meantime I would suggest you try telecommuting even if it's just a couple of days a week if possible. I did this at my old job and it was very helpful for my side-business because of the flexibility that it gave me on my telecommuting days.
