This is a bit in the future for me, but I'm doing some research on self-publishing and selling my own books, mostly through the web. I'm talking physical books, not e-books here, by the way. There are quite a few print on demand sites, but most of these seem to offer rather lame deals where they keep most of the profit. Their cost of printing there is so high, that your book either needs to be overpriced (and unlikely to sell), or your profit will be marginal. I'm thinking there must be other ways to go about it. Shelling out for a few a couple of thousand copies, and selling those. And how about printing overseas, where costs are cheaper. Any ideas? While I can manage shipping the books myself, I wouldn't mind having a third party take care of the whole posting and packaging business, as long as it doesn't cut to much into my profit. So to those of you that have self-published. Can you share some of your experiences with it? What was good? And what was not so good about it? I would love to get some tips. |

I started self-publishing with Lulu and now I mostly use CreateSpace, which is Amazon's subsidiary. Comparing the two CreateSpace seems to be better but they do not carry all sizes. Lulu seems to carry more sizes. Here is a link to some of the books I (Michael Beloved) published: Amazon: Amazon.com: LULU: michael beloved Books - Lulu.com Goodreads: Michael Beloved |

Thanks for the tips. I was looking at CreateSpace yesterday, and doing some calculations, and their prices weren't half bad...and getting your book on Amazon is a big bonus. I'm planning to use it for comics work, and it was nice to see that some of your books contain lots of images...so presumably comics would work just fine.

In terms of color interior, CreateSpace is the cheapest. One of the books named Wonders of Spring* which I published for a relative of mine, was color interior. The one which has many diagrams and sketches was all done in Black and White for the interior. If you need help or have a question let me know. * all color interior children's book: Amazon.com: Wonders Of Spring: Ingrid Thomas-Clark: Books |
