First...what is the underlying purpose of your question? Why do you want to create value. What is your goal? What do you enjoy doing? What are some of your natural talents or things that come easy to you? Identify these skills then find someone who can benefit from your talents. Then...give away your time with no expectation of anything in return. Take satisfaction in the ability to learn and be involved. I have met some of my most important mentors and business partners by practicing this philosophy...it works! |

I do basketball coaching on the side as a volunteer for 9-10 year olds at a local recreation center. I also do a tiny bit of one on one basketball coaching for a few kids for money. I have business cards promoting this service. I have not gained new customers yet and I have passed nearly all 500 cards out. I also volunteer for a big brother type of an organization where I mentor a 9 year old. I enjoy everything I do but I need money. | |

Ahhh! That intention is much clearer now. Based on your description, you are already providing value in a number of areas. That's awesome that you are a basketball nut...so am I!! I love hoops. Let's look at it in terms of "psychic income". What I mean is, the income representing the reward you receive for the service you render. When it comes to your volunteer work, I am guessing your reward is a genuine feeling of happiness of being able to help kids. Measure your reward based on the satisfaction you receive. When it comes to earning money, you most certainly deserve to be financially compensated when you provide a service. Again, in your case it is basketball coaching/mentoring. I think you need to separate your service into 2 groups. The type of coaching you do as a volunteer and the type of coaching you do as a professional. Since it is money you are after, it makes sense to sit down and figure out your target market. Who is in a position to pay for your services. What is a fair market value based on the service you provide. Handing out business cards is one thing but finding true buyers who need what you provide is a totally different "ball" game Who is your ideal client? My guess is you should target the parents of kids who have a deep passion and future aspirations for college/pro basketball. They are the one's who would be willing to invest in your services.
