Hi, just wondering how to make a positive impact on the phone to someone so that i might land a job? any tips? My dad gave me the number of an acquaintance who might be able to get me some work doing production/set work on a movie. I would love to do this basically to gain some experience in this field. However I'm a bit nervous about calling because although I'm not as bad as I used to be, sometimes I get all tongue tied on the phone and I'm not sure how to go about calling someone about getting a potential job. i thought that i will introduce myself, say my dad gave me his number, ask about work and outline some relevant experience i have. should i ask if he's busy? but because it would probably be a short call it might not matter? i'm excited to ring but also kind of afraid that i will screw it up and sound like an idiot, usually when i pick up to call (anyone i dont know well) i feel confident but then once i hear the ringing i feel really nervous any help would be appreciated |

Good strategy! I always ask if it's a good time to call, also for short calls. Focus on the one you're talking with, it will lessen your nervousness. Before you call, make a list of what you know about the job, and questions you want to ask. Also make a list of the qualities you bring for that job. Then: just call! |

Spirit 4711 had some great tips. I would just add two.... It's an NLP technique. Before you call, remember one or more times when you were successful. Immerse yourself in those memori(es) and put your pointer finger and your thumb together with every memory of success. This will lock in the feeling of success. When you make the phone call, keep those fingers together. Ho'oponopono is a problem solving technique. It involves taking full responsibility. If you have been on these blogs much, you might have noticed one of Steve Pavlina's blogs on Subjective Reality. This is related, because it is also about taking 100% responsibility. It is up to you. Read this material, and then make the phone call when you expect the answer to be yes. |

If you're feeling really nervous, you may want to ask a good friend to role play with you..."act out" the call a couple of times, and I think you'll see it's not as bad as it seems...hopefully all goes well.... Mr. Self Development |
