Default Do you retain official "authorship" when you freelance write for someone?

I am just about to throw in my 10 bucks for Elance.com, but I am wondering: if I write something, I can still officially claim to be the author right? Otherwise, wouldn't it be classified as "ghost writing"? If I write an ebook for someone, I definitely would want to be recognized as the author and be able to list it in my portfolio.

P.S. I realize I used incorrect grammar in this post.

Default it depends

on what the person asks for. Most people want to keep the rights. However, if you do good work you will still build a reputation. Is that why you want to keep the author rights or is there another reason?

Right, just for reputation. I know I will get a rating on Elance but I don't want my reputation to rest within Elance; I want it to rest within my real world identity. Hence I would like to have the right to claim not ownership, but authorship of any work I produce.

That depends entirely on the contract that you make with the other person.

Default Your reputation will grow

The wages on elance are really not that great. I use it to build relationships. That is really the reputation which I am talking about. I also use it to find coaching clients because there are a ton of people there building businesses. What kind of stuff are you wanting to write?

Aiming mostly for technical and user guide type documents, particularly related to energy, LEED, or engineering.
