Default Need some part time job ideas

I am currently without a job and need to make $1000 per month to cover my rent, food, and interest payments. I have a degree in math and used to work in finance and investments. However, I left my job 3 years ago and did not reenter the workforce. It was a stupid and irresponsible thing to do...

Now, finally, I decided to work myself out of this hole. I will find a job in finance and start my professional career again. But it will take some time for me to prepare myself emotionally and intellectually to reenter this path. In the mean time, I need to take on several part time jobs to pay for my expenses. I've been looking on the internet and applied to a plethora of jobs there: math tutor, driver, newspaper carrier, nightclub doorman. There had been no response at all. I admit I've only waited 1 week but the lack of response had been uncomfortable and I suspect I may not be doing enough.

Can someone please give me ideas on what I can do to improve my job search? Any possible part time job ideas?

Did you stay in touch with any contacts from your finance days? You could ease yourself back into the industry sooner with someone you already know.

Default I'm Curious

I'm curious. What have you been doing the past 3 years? Math tutor stood out for me in your statement. Perhaps you could contact other math tutors and ask them how they make money. What about going back to school and getting a teaching certificate so that you can teach math? What would you have to do to become a substitute teacher?

Good luck.

Thanks, that's a good question John. I ask myself that same question now. To be honest, I wasted three of the best years of my life (mid 20s) by being a bum. I wasn't even going out and having fun. I locked myself up and dedicated my time to feeling miserable. I did not seek professional help, but I guess I was suffering from a depression.

I'm not interested in becoming a math teacher. I'm pretty sure my path in the immediate future is in finance. However, given my personal condition and the state of the current economy, it should take at least a couple months before I can land a job in finance. So I want to work as a math tutor for now to bridge the gap.

Thanks Rebecca. Unfortunately, I don't think I left a good impression when I left.

Best thing would be to take any job which is available even if this meant going below your standards. In parallel then you can look for job of your choice.
