I've thought about mentioning my blog to potential employers when they ask what I've been doing between jobs, just to show that I haven't regressed to a vegetable-like state. Some of the stuff I write is rather controversial, and I probably sound like a hippy, but maybe they would appreciate the honesty? What do you think?

I've considered this as well, but decided against it for two reasons. First, the potential employer may feel threatened. If I have a site that can potentially eat up my time or make me money, they may lose some, or all, of my resources as an employee. Second, the stuff I write about is just too controversial. I don't even tell most of the people in my personal life about my site. Why would I tell an employer? Of course, this was just my reasoning when I considered this question for myself. I wish you luck in deciding what is best for you. |

I wouldn't write my blog if I wouldn't consider it representative for who I am. And I wouldn't want to take a job that I am not adequate for. So yes, I would show everybody my blog, I wouldn't think about it for one second. However, I would correct all my spelling mistakes first There is a practical side to sticking with principles such as honesty and integrity. You may consider hiding something a good strategy in one specific situation. But hiding it will undermine you in a palpable way. If you wouldn't accept compromises, you would end up creating for yourself a life where situations that require you to compromise will not exist anymore. If you make compromises, the need for you to make compromises will persist, and you will be unable to succeed without compromising. And you can't have everything if you have to give up one thing to obtain another. Last edited by bluedragon; 03-30-2009 at 08:54 PM. |
