Default Franchises (Food & Otherwise)

Anyone here own a franchise? I'm currently in the application stage of aquiring my first. It's not related to food, because food service is a TOUGH BUSINESS. Does anyone have any experience with buying, selling, or running a franchise? I'm eager to hear about it what you think the pros and cons are, so I might enlighten my investing partner a bit further.

I purchased a business, but not a franchise. I looked into franchises, and decided against them. Below are the basic pros/cons I came up with back then:

Pros:
Name recognition, centralized advertising.
Training and support available.
Established systems. (no need to develop your own.)

Cons:
Royalties and franchise fees.
Available support and training varies from franchise to franchise.
Established systems. (can't develop your own or alter existing ones.)
