The first step is to choose a domain name (see the article below in my signature). Next, I would recommend using Wordpress to run your blog. Wordpress is free open source software and is very easy to install.

I always recommend Site Build It for building a website / blog. It will teach you how to:

- find the perfect domain name
- build a simple design template
- generate free traffic
- write friendly, useful content
- set up relevant income streams
- earn passive income from your hobby site

...and a lot more that will make your site a success. You CAN achieve this with free programs like Wordpress but that is simply a platform, it doesn't provide you (as far as I know) with the step by step guide you need to succeed. If you are a beginner and want traffic/income, this is an excellent way to go about it.

Here's my own Site Build It Review

And here's Steve's Site Build It

You may also want to look up the SBI threads in this forum to get a taste of what people think of it.

It's good to see others who are interested in sharing their experiences with the world!

As a new blogger, I would suggest that you use a free blog domain through wordpress first, and then after you have gotten the feel for blogging you can move on to more complicated things - such as buying a domain name and creating a personalized blog.

1) Go to WordPress.com » Get a Free Blog Here
2) Sign up and follow the steps
3) Start blogging.

Good luck!

You can read the 10-day Action Guide for free

SBI! Action Guide

Even though you are talking about making a blog, the essence is much the same as a website. This Action Guide is The Holy Grail of instructions for building an online business. If you follow this to the letter, you cannot fail.

Alternatively, if you are only looking for technical instructions on building a WordPress blog, I'd follow the instructions on the WordPress website. Good luck!

I agree that Wordpress is a good way to go. I started my Wordpress blog a month ago, and used Thesis Themes as a template. The initial learning curve was a little steep, but google searches, some book work, and appealing to the Thesis forum (a nice benefit of paying a bit for this template) got me thru the worst of it. Now I still have a lot to learn, but the site is up and running, and I'm able to tinker with layout, add some affiliate marketing, etc. I started with very little internet knowledge.

I highly recommend both Wordpress and Thesis. WP is free, Thesis costs a bit but is worth it.

1. Find something that you want to write about
2. Write 10 quality articles for that site *before* you set up the blog
3. Put together a plan and schedule for writing the next 5-10 articles
4. NOW worry about setting up the site... (domain name, software, etc.)

Sign up for a PAID web host -- host gator, perhaps. There is an automatic install, just click and you should have wordpress up and running.

Natural way would be is to find other people's blogs who is similar to yours and participate in the discussion, comment on their blogs, bring value into conversation.

That is the natural way to bring traffic

You can google, there are hundreds ways to bring traffic (PPC, SEO...), but those I pointed out first is a great way and it is a way to build a relationship (might not be the fastest way, btw)

Also Blogging is the commitment and will require time. If you are not committed, it might be a problem.

Good Luck

my blog has been created and thus far has generated 200 views in 3 days. Is that a good start? How many views should I aim for before I start to try an make money from it?

Why should people want to help you?
You come here and cry: "Me Me Me". People give you suggestions but you only respond with another one line question.

Talking about this in terms of “bad news” or “bad judgment by business leaders” seems archaic. It’s like describing World War One as “a serious diplomatic concern.”

@ Mchenry,

Re: How to start a (hosted) blog.

1. Buy domain. Use Psychic Whois to find the one you want. Use Dreamhost to register it.

2. Log into the Dreamhost control panel. Use the advanced "one-click" wordpress install on your domain.

Re: Getting traffic:

You have to have compelling content. Your current articles are littered with spelling errors and, frankly, don't make much sense.

For instance:

Quote:
I think we should take a black light to your wang and admire the vagina fluid that remains. Because by gawd you’ve done a completely natural act many times over and should be congratulated for it son.
Quote:
You have to view others as if your looking at yourself. People VALUE MY opinion in the outside world. They view me as their hero and role model. And yet I’m 28 , jobless and live with my parents. On the inside, I think to myself

“Wow, they are clearly drinking the KOOL AID I’m giving them” meaning , people GIVE me the power to be POWERFUL.

I’M a fraud. I laugh on the inside.
I seriously have no idea what you are talking about anywhere in your blog. Living at home at 28 and being a fraud is not compelling for most people.

Maybe video blogging would be a better fit for your message?

Actually Dan, there are not any spelling errors in the quotes you have posted. Some words are slang words and maybe that's why you don't understand. This is a new blog based off one I've had going for a year and generated 34 thousand views.

If you don't understand what I am saying, maybe your not part of my target demographic.

When I talked about living at home and being a fraud. What that meant was that people idolise me when they shouldn't. It's not about harmony and togetherness. It's real life stuff for degenerates like myself.

Thank you. I was thinking about your comment earlier. Then I looked at YOUR sites and came to a conclusion as to why my site may not have been for you.

My site is low bro , sophmoric [spelled wrong I know] humor. You seem to be a genius
who has worked for major corporations. Perhaps your too intelligent to enjoy my blog. But I am glad you liked Milk hunter. I'm sure you may enjoy others in their as well!

If you want to learn from others, learning to consider advice from them is worthwhile.

I'm open to advice. But if someone reads my blog and says I suck or I'm not compelling. That's just their opinion. A lot of people find it compelling and some won't. I'm not going to change my stories. They are great.

I've moved the articles to focus more on my stories. Take a read. I'm sure you and others will love them. I'v moved the most compelling stories to the first page. Advice taken. It's a work in progress. I'll keep what works and delete what doesn't.
