Default my reason for becoming a millionaire

Awesome post Erin!
You said exactly what I was thinking more eleoquently than I imagined could be done!

I think the point where I really learned this lesson is when my sister's husband attempted suicide while on drugs. I was the only family member she called because she knew that I would be understanding instead of saying "I told you so."

She had a two year old daughter to take care of, a husband in the emergency room, a messy living room to clean up after his attempt, a marriage to reconsider and no one there to help her.

I was living a pretty simple lifestyle at the time. I was so tempted to buy a plane ticket and go see her, but the ticket was more than I could afford and my boss wouldn't let me take anymore time off.

I let my sister down because I was only making enough money for myself. That really sucks.

Living a simple, frugal life didn't help my sister. Being rich will allow me to start a mentoring program for her and other women like her to help pull them out of these messes and create better lives for themselves and their families.

For the record, we are pretty frugal in our normal lifestyle and don't plan to change much even as our income increases. My goal is to grow my own small business to a worth of $1,000,000 within 3 years (I'll be 27 in 3 years) with a passive income of $100,000 per year.

By the way, this is just for my business. My husband has his own as well.

Rebecca

Default Wealth vs. Paper Money

Not only do you believe that you personally can only have a finite amount of money, but you believe that your country, and indeed everyone in the world, is thus also limited. It's not true, and our country is great because our leaders have always understood this. But thinking this way as a populace is what creates depressions, recessions, and currency devaluations. It's actually unpatriotic to think this way, and it hurts the entire country.

Here's an article I wrote about how the Federal Reserve creates money, and how the concept of infinite wealth is built into the very structure of the American dollar: [LINK]
Yes, the Federal reserve does create money. Actually a better way of saying it would be "the Federal Reserve prints paper currency." It cannot create real wealth, just pieces of paper that we call money. The printed money from the Fed becomes government debt, and is ultimately a tax on all of us. Not to mention that it causes inflation and actually decreases our wealth.

True wealth is created through the millions of mutually beneficial transactions that occur every day throughout the world. When I give you 10 dollars for a book, it's because I value the book more than the 10 dollars and you value the 10 dollars more than the book. This transaction leaves both of us better off, and wealthier.

The Fed does not make anyone wealthier (except for the government). If you want to become truly wealthy in your life, then you will have to help a lot of people by providing them with something that they value more than their money.

That being said... my personal goal is to reach a million by age 30. I'm 25 now.

It is kind of interesting that this forum seems to be dominated by younger people and people who seem to be focused on makeing large amounts of money.

CNN has set up a special section of articles dealing with the scientific study of happiness.

So far, I have read an article that has stated that money will not contribute to happiness significantly unless someone is in abject poverty. After $50,000 a year more money will make hardly any difference in happiness levels.

The article stated that people tend to get happier as they get older with the exception of extremely aged people. Younger people were the most unhappy people. Kind of interesting as a poll on this forum showed that most PD enthusiasts are in their 20's.

Check it out on your own:

I find this interesting too. I see a very interesting subculture here on Steve's website. True, there are quite a lot of young people on this forum. But rather than being mostly unhappy people that CNN describes, it seems that a higher than normal percentage of us are actually enjoying our lives now, rather than waiting til we are 50!

We (I, at least) have no delusions that the more money we make, the happier we'll be. Money doesn't make us happy, but it sure is a handy tool.

Is it wrong to make more money than most people can ever dream of having? Does that make us... greedy?

I don't think so.

Being poor doesn't help poor people, it doesn't help our society and it doesn't help our planet.

As one of my mentors says, "The best way to save a tree is to buy it."

If you find yourself reading this post and thinking nasty thoughts, look at this list. Most of the funding for these organizations comes from large donations for rich, good-hearted people!

Sierra Club - Re-greening our parks
Big Brother, Big Sister - Giving kids a adult role model to look up to when they have none.
Doctors without Borders - Giving those people who have no chance of earning $10,000 in their lifetime medical care
Red Cross - Disaster assistance when it's needed most
Make a wish foundation - Helping kids believe in miracles when they are needed most
Salvation Army - Secend hand, helping hand

As Erin said, what would the world be like if the kind, wise, compassionate, loving, peaceful people all decide to make just enough money for their own needs?

I see a lot of enthusiastic people around here

I'm 28 and don't expect to be a millionaire before 30, though I won't be very surprised if I become one - I've got all the tools that are necessary to make it happen (see my sig). I just don't want to rush things up to much ;-)

all the best

Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but many of you are way more optimistic than reality seems to suggest. I guess that is a good thing, but a net worth of say $100,000 might be a good goal.

Very few people end up with a net worth of $1,000,000.

^ Human beings seem to be overestimate our abilities constantly. And that's healthy people. That doesn't disqualify hte idea of ending up a millionaire.

You're right, few people end up with a net worth of a million. If I recall the stats from The Millionaire Next Door right (and I think that's an eight year old book) then at least 3.5 million americans have a networth of a million dollars or more. That's a tiny part of the overall population, but that's still substantial.

You can end up a millionaire surprisingly easily, provided you start early enough. Compound interest really does do wonders in the long-term, which is something you understand, because I just read your other post. Which is just one method of becoming a millionaire.

To start off with, sure, 100,000 dollars would be more realistic, but, there is a certain allure to a million dollars. While a million dollars isn't as much as it used to be 50-100 years ago, it still holds that strange sense of accomplishment or mystery from that time. Why not aim high? If you're going towards a million dollars, you'll have to hit 100,000 dollars somewhere along the way.

You need at least 700k just to buy an average house here in the north of Sydney. It's crazy.

So far I've got no reason to become a millionaire.
Money in itself is no motivator for me. As long as I can afford my lifestyle and save some for later I'm fine.

If I'd win a million right now I'd just stuff it into some bank account and continue living like I am right now: same work, same hobby, same living.

What would I need that million for?

Love You!

I would like to achieve the $1 million status four years from now. I am almost 22 and that would make me....*carry the two* 26!

I have no need for fancy cars and houses. I just want to have a few well trained and friendly dogs, and be able to spend my time enjoying life. I'd like to travel and live somewhere near the ocean. Go hiking, mountain biking, snowboarding whenever I please.

I plan to achieve this through my websites (I have two already). With thought out business models and reachable goals, I believe it is within reason. Of course, I would still manage the websites after achieving the million dollar milestone-just wouldn't put my whole life into them anymore!

My most recent website is The Veggie Hub: Combining all your vegetarian needs. It is a vegetarian and vegan resource site.

25. That's next year. No problem. But then again I live in So California, where a 'nice' house is worth at least a mil. We have a lot more people worth a million or more around here that don't even realize it.

Unless I win the lottery tonight (or ever) it will be years before I could ever get there.
My bf and his co-worker (who is already a millionaire) have their goals. The co-worker is working on his B goal. B standing for billions.
My bf is working on his M (millions).
I am still working on my thousands, hehe. I'm a writer, what can I say.
I don't exactly aspire to have millions, but I have all these ideas for websites floating around and if I ever learn how to create a website, I have a great idea. Maybe tomorrow I will get books from the library on that.
Here in Vancouver we can no longer buy a home for under $500,000 and the price is going up daily it seems. BF and his co-worker flip houses on the side, so that does quite well.
I just want to make money and not have to worry. It would be nice to own a home one day.

Very few people seem to visiting Steve Pavlina compared to the overall pupulation of this planet.
The number of people who become millionaires os greater than the number of Steve Pavlina reader.
Sure not every Steve Pavlina reader will become a millionaire, but most Pavlina reader are much better educated about finance, and personal growth than the average citizen. That means you should except that more of them become millionaires too.

Posts like this make me cringe. It's true, but it's doesn't apply to anyone inparticular. Especially the readers here.

Don't place unnecessary restrictions on yourself simply because other people are too afraid to go out and acheive for themselves.

The great majority of people don't ever acheive substantial wealth, but it's usually because they're too afraid to risk the comfort and saftey their 9-5 provides. There's certainly nothing wrong with not wanting or needing alot of money, but don't let the statistics drag you down when they don't even apply to you.

As for me, I know I'll be a millionaire by the years end. I'm about a 1/3 of the way there. My original goal was two million by 25, but it just dawed me a couple of weeks ago that I'll have my first million by 2008, and there's really not much I can do to stop it .

Arrow Generating income without a job

Hello,

I just joined this forum. I am looking for ways to earn money with a website. To be honest I created already a website in Dutch, and I translated it into english (www.yourfirstmillion.eu). I put already Google Adsense advertisements on it. But now I am searching for "linksites" to generate traffic. However, I cannot find them. What is the best way to generate traffic for websites?

I hope this is going to work. In that case I can be a journalist, creating content using what I know = interesting for others.

Thanks in advance for advice.
