Default Technical Blogging for non-Technical Audience

Can someone list the best strategies for a blogger while posting technical articles to a largely non-technical target audience?

Yeah, imagine you're talking to a retard.

It worked wonders in my dealings with non-savvy customers. You have no idea how many problems come out of misunderstanding of something that honestly seems 2+2 to you.

My motto became: If you have no idea what's wrong, just keep asking your customer stupid questions and the solution shall emerge.

Have a test audience.

Ask for example the receptionist/bookkeeper/your spouse etc to read your blog posts before posting them. If she/he doesnīt understand something, you need to re-write.

Also, try and avoid words and terms that are only known to technical people. Donīt use too many (things that make words shorter, i have no idea of the word for it in english; for example: Say Operating System, not OS)

Good luck.

I like to use analogies. Often I can get someone to comprehend something new by relating it to something familer. That and explain your acronyms.

LOL!!!

I was adviced to speak to an audience on a children level. That helps because the communication is basic and clear. But I am not on technical side though. But I guess it applies to almost every subject.

Thanks for all the suggestions. I basically got to learn these things from this thread:
1. Imagine you are talking to a retard / kiddos
2. Have a test audience ( good suggestion)
3. Avoid abbreviating
4. Use analogies (really good suggestion)

If you're blogging about how to use certain software, screenshots would probably help. It might be good to leave comments open (or have a forum) and add to the main blog post any improvements suggested by commenters, or answers to questions they ask.

When writing about technical topics with non-technical people in mind, I often end up throwing in lots of links to Wikipedia or elsewhere to more thoroughly explain basic things I don't feel like going into depth about myself.

Best wishes,
Apollia

Donīt talk as if you are talking to retards or children...

Even if I donīt understand what some technical term means, I still would like to be treated as a respected adult.

The fasted way to alianate your audience is to disrespect them.
