I'm under the impression that it's against the law to be voluntarily homeless. Would the police actually carry you away to jail or something if they find you homeless?

If you still have a legal address somewhere that can receive government mail that you will read I don't think that you are homeless in the sense that you violate a law. However in some areas sleeping on the street might also be illegal.

I don't think that there is a law that says "thou shall rent or own a home." Trespassing is prohibited in most countries and there maybe laws or regulations that state you can't sleep in the streets, but being homeless in itself isn't outlawed.

In Germany there is a law that says that you have to be registered as living at one address. If you get some speeding ticket the government wants to know where to send the ticket.

There is no such thing as voluntary homelessness, from the law's point of view. They are laws against things such as vagrancy, loitering, refusal to leave a public place / trespassing / being in a park after closing time, indecent exposure (eg peeing in the park because all bathrooms are closed), etc |
