I love writing fiction and over the years I've posted a decent number of short stories on the internet (about 500 - 3000 words each). At some point I wanted to write a fantasy book, however after several attempts I've realized that writing a story this long is just not for me - my best plots last for about 10,000 words and if I try to push it further then it just feels fake and I end up loosing interest in both the story and the characters. With that said, if I'm not writing a book then how can I earn money through my passion? Is there any place where I can earn money by writing short stories? |

Quick thought: why don't you bundle a couple of your short stories into a larger work? You could sell the bundle on places like Self Publishing - Lulu.com or make money off ads through a site like Scribd Also, read this book: Amazon.com: On Writing: Stephen King: Books Another book on writing I can highly recommend is Amazon.com: Story: Substance, Structure, Style and The Principles of Screenwriting: Robert Mckee: Books (the book deals with writing screenplays, but most of what he says applies to novels and short stories too) Good luck! |

You can post your fiction on Helium or Associated Content. Neither site will pay upfront for the work (they only pay upfront for non-fiction), but you should be able to earn from pageviews if your work attracts readers. With Associated Content, set your articles up as "display only" so that you retain all rights to it and can edit or delete as you please. Alternatively, you can easily set up a blog free on Blogger, and write your stories on there, place a little advertising on it, and earn that way. |

You can also try to get freelance work for game companies. I work for CCP games which owns White Wolf and we have an army of freelance writers working for us whenever we are publishing a new sourcebook or the like. We also have a couple of full-time writers but those positions are much more difficult to get into. Of course, to take on that line of work you must we willing and able to write stories in a pre-created universe. Hope that doesn't bother you. |
