Thumbs up Exciting New Model for Musicians - Check it Out!

Christine Kane, a singer/songwriter and PD blogger* who occasionally reads & posts on this forum, has started an *awesome* way to record a CD. Rather than borrow the money, then tour to pay the loan, she started a site, Be My Record Label. She's pre-selling the CD in several different packages, from $10 for a digital download, to $5,000 to be an executive producer.

Anyone who visits the site is privy to what happens as she creates the CD - AND can let their opinion be known, down to being able to advise her on whether the chorus should happen twice at the end of the song or not!

It's an inspiring, exciting way to do things, and provides a different model for getting a CD made! I think it's a great experiment, and I'm loving reading the process so far. I've enjoyed her music for many years. (I bet you will, too - you can listen here, here, and here.)

I thought folks here would love the vision and boldness of this musician and pioneer.

*OK, I say PD blogger, because her blog does encompass a LOT of personal development and inspiration... but it's also about being an artist in the world, and also includes the occasional cat game, picture of her dog, and funny random thoughts...

Hmmm... sounds vaguely similar to what that Dutch singer guy is doing...

(but it is cool that more and more musicians are trying new business models - good for everyone)

That's interesting. It kind of takes (what I see) as the purpose of making music out of it, but it's an interesting concept.

I guess when I was making music I wanted to make it the way I wanted to make it, and then give it to people. I know some people view it as the music business, but I've always seen it as the music business.

Christine writes a LOT about this in her blog, how some artists are afraid to see themselves as businesspeople, or believe they don't have the skills to do that. She thinks they're setting themselves up if they don't look at it as a business. She is an artist primarily - she's not going to change something on a song if it doesn't ring true to her. I think it's an interesting way to stretch, though. She has combined artistry and business in quite a beautiful, successful way.
