Default Which Host site to choose vs stay away from?

Hi All,

I was recommended HostICan as a place to host my blogs, what others would you recommend I look into or stay away from?

I want to host 3 sites and I already own the domain for one of them. One of the blogs I'll want to enable paypal or something similar on...

Thanks,
D

Everyone has their own personal experiences =). Dreamhost, funny enough, is one that I actually don't like (but my former coworker does). The problem with them is that they oversell their bandwidth and space, but then limit you to how much processing can happen on their servers - effectively making your bandwidth and space limits useless.

I personally use asmallorange for my sites and am very happy with them. I have also received good customer service from both, but asmallorange is MUCH faster and issues take one email to resolve - versus multiple with dreamhost as they kept escalating my problem.

Default Central Maine Web

My name is Ken LaVoie and I'm a member of the forum. I also own CentralMaineWeb.com - which is a locally owned small web hosting and design company in Winslow, Maine. I am always glad to help forum members with reasonably priced hosting. I can also host multiple domains for you for the price of one hosting account. My server is VERY under-taxed and I have around 100 clients. You can call me, email me, and you're always dealing with ME. If you're not happy, I offer a no questions asked, (although I'll ask why) 60 day guarantee - money back on hosting. We also use fantastico, which is a script installer which instantly installs wordpress, etc. though I recommend if you're capable of "hand installing" that you do so. Any questions, PLEASE let me know.

Hope all is Wel
Ken

Hi for what it's worth here is my 2 cents as they say I use hosting zooms budget re-seller plan it does work ok but if you have to many page requests it can trip a script that limits the bandwidth, they do have a failover plan that is better if you have a quite a few WP blogs.

All I did on my blog was installed WP supercache and don't seem to be having so many problems as before.

I like Bluehost for most people who do not use lots of processing power. For more industrial strength hosting I like ServInt where I have a VPS. I would avoid 1&1.

Happy Trails!

I am using LunarPages and it works quite well. I had big problems with DreamHost before - so just a heads up.

If you want absolute control over everything, I can recommend Slicehost. They provide you with your own Linux “slice”, which you can SSH to and control from there. You can install whatever software you wish, e.g. PHP, MySQL, and Apache. But the drawback are of course that (1) it is a bit costly (but hey, you’re getting your own slice; you get what you pay for); and (2) you need a little bit of experience in working your way around the Linux command line.

Hi, I don't know what you think about this, but paid hosting for free is my favorite one.
I've found a free contest here some days ago, and it offers a free domain name + 1 year hosting, you can still join:
FREE Domain Name and 1 Year Web Hosting Contest | Michael Aulia - Technology and Reviews

Oh, and anyone knows anything about this hosting he mentiones? -->think411.com

it's not free, so I guess it can'T be bad, but maybe someone has previous experiences with them...

I too agree that Bluehost is worthwhile. It's working for me!

I like imountain.com, they are solar powered. A little pricey for webmaster just starting out. Lunarpages & rapidvps (mainly VPS) are not bad too.

I have negative experience with hostnine.

Is it really a concern to keep the domain registration separate from the hosting service? I'm asking because Bluehost at the moment, for example, includes the domain for free.

It is safe with Bluehost, because it is an honest company. I once had to move to another host. It was no problem with Bluehost. They just refunded me proportionally and closed my hosting account. However, I was still able to keep my domains with them; I just started pointing those domains at different nameservers. So, don't worry about Bluehost; they should be safe.
