(note: Just a guess, I have no knowledge or experience in this)

I would guess that a first step would be hanging around the gallery. Show an interest in the work there, etc. Tight knit communities tend to hire from within, or use the good old boys network. You have to get known to get hired.

How much do you really want the job?

Be persisitent and even if they dont need any staff if you keep coming back daily or weekly just to check if they have any job vacancies yet, you be the first in mind when someone quits or is sick.

The first job I got was somewhere that I knew literally hundreds of other students had handed thier resumes in before me, but they just had no work available. I got dressed up and three days in a row I walked in and gave them a resume to the manager on the third day the manager realised I was the same girl from the two days before and he looked a bit shocked, then and there on the spot he said they don't have any work at the moment but would I like to try out tomorrow anyway (for a trial/training). When I turned up I got shown the ropes and I did as much as I could, and when the four hours was up and I was told I went well and I could go home I just said I would like to stay on and help out, and I did for hours longer until I had to leave to go to another job trial/training.

Both jobs

When you hand in your resume make sure your resume applies to the work as much as you can- for an art gallery add in your goals to work/promote a gallery, people skills, knowledge of art.
Dress to what is expected, what do all the other gallery workers wear? If you are not sure, overdress rather than underdress to show how serious you are, go for the more professional look.
And try as hard as possible to hand your resume to the manager not another worker- because they do sometimes chuck it straight in the bin. Also hand it in to the manager because the manager is the one that will decide who to employ next and letting them know how enthusiastic you are to get in and work for them and let them become familiar with you will only remind him of you when he needs a new employee.

Sometimes they really cannot afford or need to put you on, but why not work for free? Try to offer to work for free as a training period(after all it normally costs them to pay thier own staff to train you on top of paying you while you are only training).

And let them know that once you are trained you are willing to work on a call in basis-you will be amazed at how a call in job can turn into a full time roster at work.

The more resumes you hand out the higher the chances of getting a call. If you happen to get more then 1 trial do them all and dont be afraid to let them know that other galleries are interested in you to work for them.
