Default Adopting New Financial Beliefs

After reading Steve's blog post on what he learned from being bankrupt in his 20's, I realized I had some bad financial beliefs. Well, I knew I had some, but I hadn't really examined it yet to see what they were . Reading through his post really helped me see what those bad financial beliefs were. Thus I'm going to change them.

I thought I'd check in and see if my new financial beliefs are really good ones to have, if I'm not missing anything in adopting them, if I should tweak them or not, or adapt different new beliefs.

OLD BELIEF #1 : “If I’m in Debt and Broke, my life is ruined”
NEW BELIEF #1: “If I’m in Debt and Broke, that only affects on part of my life - the finances. The rest of my life can still be fun, joyous and truly amazing!”.

OLD BELIEF #2: “If I’m in Debt and broke, that means I can’t work on what I love”
NEW BELIEF #2: “If I’m in debt and broke, the only way I’ll get out of debt is by working on what I love”

OLD BELIEF #3: “Working for what you love is more important then the money you make”
NEW BELIEF #3: “Working on what I love is the best and only way to allow financial abundance to come into my life”

Cool

I just saw Byron Katie applying The Work to the belief "I need more money", maybe you'd want to look into it?

It's here: The Work of Byron Katie

I've also often heard of Busting loose from the money game. It's said to be excellent. I haven't read it yet, but ordered it from Amazon. Should arrive in August

Good luck with your finances!

Cool! I'll PM you when I'm ready to start, this is off-topic here...

Oh about financial beliefs, I forgot one more great resource: Marc Allen. I love this one: Amazon.com: The Type-Z Guide to Success: A Lazy Person's Manifesto to Wealth and Fulfillment: Marc Allen: Books

Steve reviewed it here. He also did an interview with him, see here.

I would suggest the following beliefs:

If I'm in debt and broke, there are millions of ways I could get out of debt. However, I CHOOSE to get out of debt by working on what I love.

Working on what I love is the most fun and fulfilling way for financial abundance to come into my life.

Question

Congratulations, seeker5, on having the courage to examine your beliefs in this area, which for many people is quite troublesome!

As you go through the process of creating new money beliefs, I am curious how the words "I'm in debt and broke" help your new beliefs. Perhaps this might be a good opportunity to examine them further?

Read it a year and a half ago, loved it! I might re-read it now with the increased awareness I have about intention manifestation - I think it was really the first book I read on the subject.

Thanks Uber! That's true, I may be locking myself for thinking the only way I can get myself out of debt is if I'm doing what I love. I had written it that way at the time in a way to "force" me to work on what I love. However, I see now writing it this way does block me from accepting other ways of getting out of debt- such as by intention-manifestation, by winning the lottery, etc. So I'll rewrite them to be more open.

Hmmmm, you mean, how I use it to mean I'm in debt and broke? That it may hinder my progress if I believe in that? Well, I'm not in debt right now (since October of last year - for the first time in 6-7 years...!), and I'm not broke because I've got some money saved up. So I don't believe I'm in debt and broke, so I was using the "if" in the belief statement. I have however been very fearful though of returning to being broke and in debt, tremendously fearful and scared of it because I spent 6-7 years being broke and in debt and I never want to return to that way of being. However, I see that the bad beliefs I had about finances really helped me to stay in debt and broke for so long. So perhaps if I fix my bad beliefs about finances, not only will it help me stay out of debt, but perhaps I won't fear becoming broke and in debt again.

Thank you for clarifying that for me, seeker5. It sounds like you've learned a lot since those times, which is an accomplishment to celebrate.

I wonder if it might be appropriate or helpful for you to add a more expansive belief, something along the lines of

"I have learned so much from my past and am free of any need to repeat past missteps."

How does soemthing like that feel to you?

If you focus on finances to the exclusion on everything else that can be a source of problems. Your belief could be "I am organizing my life in a way that I can do things that are interesting to me and valuable to others, which will result in enjoying myself and doing well financially".

You don't have to be doing something you love, but financial success usually comes from a lot of persistence and ignoring things that look good if you have nothing better to do. Both of these are easier if you're doing something interesting, and you might not even notice how much persistence it takes

If you're finding things difficult you need to really think about what you want - considering that you need to do something of value to others to get what you want from them, what's the best life you can imagine? What are the exact steps you could take to get that? Think about this long enough and you won't be fighting yourself; you'll have no choice but to do the right thing.
