| ChaCha.com is a website that has SMS text guides. Basically how this works is someone sends in a question to ChaCha either through texting on their cell phone (probably 90% + of the questions), or calling in, or asking on the website, and human guides look up the answer to their question online. Basically, a guide is a middle man, doing the searching for the person and relaying the answer back to them. The answering is done through the computer, basically you just need Mozilla and download the ChaCha interface to do it. However, you do need to pass tests first. These are general ChaCha knowledge tests, a typing test, and a simulator test where you have to answer questions as you would on the job. You are not actually an employee for ChaCha, you are an independent contractor. I just recently became a full fledged guide. It's great for me because I am going into college and it's an easy way to make some money. You get 20 cents per answer, and this can add up to anywhere from 4 dollars/hr. to 12 dollars/hr. depending on how fast you get at it and the questions you receive. Certainly not gonna buy a mansion, and I highly doubt it will be fulfilling your life's purpose, but it's good for me and I imagine would probably help out some people on the board. You do have to be a U.S. resident though. I probably left a bunch of stuff out, and so if you have any questions, please ask. If you could use me as a referral (this gives me an extra 2 cents for every answer you provide but you still get your full 20 cents), I'd appreciate it, but you obviously don't have to, you can go to ChaCha.com and find it all there. My email is lukemacduke@yahoo.com if you do decide to use me as a referral. Thanks |

| Who would want to make 4 dollars an hour. You could go get an easy job and make 8 bucks an hour. It seems like a waste of time. I'd rather get a real job, and a steady income. The only way I'd see it as being good is if you were extremely efficient and could make a solid 12 bucks an hour, or if you need just a small amount of money and had no better way of getting it. |

It does work for me however, and it's definitely something you can do in your spare time for some extra money. You can do this in your own home, on your own time, and do whatever else you want at the same time. |

| Actually I was thinking it over, and I realized that it would be a good way to make some extra money. I guess I was too quick to judge:P Are they really selective with who they hire? Do you have to be a us citizen? I'm from canada. Last edited by Rosie : 06-27-2008 at 05:17 PM. |

| I could see some who enjoy helping others doing the job primarily to be helpful I could also see some people trying the work just to experience this type of job. It certainly is not the money which would motivate most people in my opinion. |

| This might be very good for me, actually. Easy, no required hours, low pressure, no need to drive anywhere, you get to learn lots of interesting new trivia, and you also get to help people. I especially like the fact that it won't be at all like having a large, long-term project to work on - everything will be short and simple, and I'll be able to stop anytime I want, and resume anytime I want, instead of constantly feeling under pressure. Plus, judging by the original post to this thread, the wages aren't fixed at $4 an hour - it depends on how fast you can work. $4 to $12 per hour will make a big difference in my life if this turns out to be suitable for me. I have close to $0 income at the moment. I hope they'll accept my application. Thanks for posting this, hazerfazer! I signed up and put in your referral address. |

No problem Apollia. I hope it works out well for you. And thanks for using me as a referral. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask. |

The problem is, I couldn't agree to the terms of service. I can't stand the idea of giving away total intellectual property rights to anything I write (unless I'm placing my stuff into the public domain, which is something I enjoy doing). So, I'm guessing that means if I chose to share anything I wrote for Chacha on my own site, I would be committing copyright infringement - by sharing something I myself wrote. This part of the TOS is particularly nasty: Quote:
So... I guess I won't do this after all. But, thanks again. Last edited by Apollia : 06-29-2008 at 04:59 AM. |

| I applied just now and am waiting to hear back. But it seems to me if you're answering SMS text questions, you're going to keep your responses to about 100 characters or less, and most questions are going to require answers that are really in the realm of public knowledge (how many calories in a pizza slice? how long is the ferry wait to the island right now? etc.) that would be exempt under their terms of service because they don't have the right to copyright that information in the first place. Unless you're sending your responses in original haiku, I don't see much to worry about. |

| Oh. Thanks again, and good luck everyone. |

| Well, I have no idea why, but for some reason "there are no Guide positions that are a good fit for you" is what I got from ChaCha. I know I answered all the ChaCha questions correctly and I'm sure I aced the typing exam, and I'm even sure I got nearly all the practice searching questions correct... perhaps I'm not supposed to ask the customer for clarification? I wish I knew what I did wrong. |

| Yes, unfortunately I did that more than once, mostly because I was surprised you were allowed to do it at all. And the test was multiple choice, but in the real world I'd have done a lot more research on the back end before asking for that, so I think the test is a bit flawed. I'm the best researcher I know! Their loss. |

And to anyone else who has signed up, you should set up all 50 of your keywords to get fast queries. Soon ChaCha will be switching over to "Categories and Interests" instead of keywords, so you might want to set those up too. |

| I signed up today, and have completed the trial test. I like this concept, and am thinking of trying to get some of my friends involved. It seems like a nice way to make a few extra dollars.

If they someone think you cheated the best it's also clear why they don't tell you what you made wrong. @hazerfazer: Have they already paid out money to you?

You are allowed to look up the answers to the questions if you know them, so getting them all right would definitely not be a problem. And I have not actually gotten paid yet. I have to set up my debit card with them, though I do know of some people that have physically used their earnings. |
