How to build a sellable image?

Hey everyone, I write and produce my own music. It's my passion, however especially with the advent of filesharing, the music industry is taking on a new life. No longer is music the end all product, but a vehicle for exposure. To truly leverage the market, I need to create an image that the public wants. I wish to obtain more of a "celeb" status which I can then use to promote content.

Myspace seems like a good way to go. I have ideas like letting photographers who want exposure doing photo shoots of me, linking to visual artists' work from my page... essentially building up the publicity, and then marketing other artists' work in exchange for some of the profits. Sounds pretty passive once it gets going, right?

But what are some good ways to kick start a highly desirable public image? Something that people want to be a part of somehow? Any and all ideas are very welcome, I really value what you all have to offer here!
