Default Starting a new webpage

Hey good people!

After reading posts on this forum I got very motivated to start my own little page and see how I'd do. Now I'll admit even though my ambitions aren't that high, I'd still like to do my best.

However I'm having a bit of a problem, cause my webpage doesn't seem to get into the major search engines (google and yahoo) after adding the URL a couple of days ago (msn only took a couple of hours to add it), and before the question is asked: no, robots.txt isn't ruining my day.

So I was wondering; Do any of you got any idea how long it will take before my page gets into google, and do you have any tips on how to speed things up?

Google will find you for sure. But it can take a few weeks, just be patient.

Have you thought about writing articles for backlinks to your site?

Submit a sitemap XML to google, it's much quicker than playing the waiting game.

I use a service called Spin success that posts my web site to hundreds of search engines for a very reasonable fee.

I also think that submitting articles helps to get your web site rated better by the search engines.

Good Luck

Why are you concerning yourself with whether your page is being indexed in the SE's or not?

Posting websites to search engines is nearly useless. Paying anything for it isn't reasonable.

Well correct me if I'm wrong, but how else will people find the webpage if it isn't indexed in an SE? Cause there aren't that many links to the site they can get to it from..

I did find free sites that (said they would) link to the major search engines, so I'd rather use them than paying anything for it. However I'm curious about your comment that posting websites to SE's is useless - and this is connected to what jamestl2 said; why is it useless?

And I'm sorry about the newbie questions, but the easiest way to learn is to ask.

If your site is important enough (measured by quanity and quality of your backlinks) to get into the first houndred results of a google search, google will have found the website through those backlinks and indexed it.

In addition there are people out there who have come to the conclusion that a website doesn't get faster indexed when you submit it to google than when you don't submit it.

Ahh.. Yeah I see your point, but as it is my page isn't important enough to get into the first hundred results, and so getting the site indexed into google could be a way of getting it more important (seeing as more people could become aware of the page).

Do you have any clue how many backlinks one would need in order to become "important enough"? (Yes I'm aware that this depends on the site's topic, but I'm thinking in general terms. Is the number closer to 1000 than 100?)

I didn't know this.. Maybe I was just lucky with msn's quick indexing, or maybe their crawler works in a different fashion. Nevertheless, thanks for clearing this up.

To get indexed you don't need many links. A few links (one quality link might even be enough) and a bit time will get you in the index.

A site for a toastmaster club in Berlin might have a handful of backlink and still get a good placement on google for the search: toastmaster berlin.
On the other hand it probably won't get a good placement for public speaking berlin.

To get traffic to your site it is bet to focus on building good content and afterwards promoting the website to get good backlinks.

I found this to be so. I have a squidoo lens that is ranked #3 for my keywords. The lens has been up a while and the only back links are from Ezine articles that have fallen off the first few pages. Until I started writing more articles all my traffic came through Yahoo.

There's lots of SEO information out there, but as far as the basics go, focus on creating quality content first, and backlinks next. Over time Google will pick up your site, you just have to be a little patient.
