Default English Professional in Vancover

I have a friend who moved from England to Vancover to start a new life with his familiy. He's a Chartered Environmentalist also a qualified life coach. Does anyone know how he could network more effectively - I suggested meetup.com. Looking for more ideas to help in integrate and find employment that matches his qualifications. Any pointers would be very much welcome as he's a good friend and starting out in a new country.

Many Thanks

Go to places where a lot of people are.
Joining Toastmaster can for example bring you in touch with a nice group of people.

Hi Brutha

I am not off topic - career is mentioned in the Buisness & Financial Section of this site- you click on forums. So why have you trashed my request? What is your purpose in highlighting the words ( users who lack posting skills ) ?

I dont want to send you a personal message but if you would like to bring up the topic of (users who lack posting skills ) then add it as a new topic and explain to Steve Pavlina why users are lacking.

Dude, chill out... it's just his signature! If you look around, you'll find it under all of his posts.

(Now, it would perhaps be a good idea if Brutha made the font smaller, so you can spot the difference between content and signature better... but then the size tag is no longer allowed in sigs )

What Jim said.

That's just Brutha's general signature -- it's not part of his reply to your question. I think you're taking it out of context. He certainly wasn't trying to insult you. Brutha's actual reply was only the first two sentences.

The signature is the part below the line and shouldn't be construed as being part of the post/reply. The signature is automatically appended to every post by the forum software.

Right on the top it says "Personal Development for Small people". Because that's our target group we, except generally on this forum that users are at least partially able to understand how a internet forum works.

One feature of an internet forum is that every user can have a signature.

Are you saying that if you don't know how a new technology works, you're...dumb? I know people with masters degree who've earned millions of dollars in a high tech area and are very smart...and have never been to a forum. Are we to exclude them out from this forum because it's their first forum?

Furthermore Brutha, this forum is an English-Only forum. Yet you make so many obvious mistake when you write in English. Does that mean since this is a forum for "smart people", we need to exclude you because you make so many mistake writing in English? Does it mean you're not smart because you can't write english properly?

I'm very suprise that you respond to a user misunderstanding your posts by implying that the person who misunderstood your post is too dumb to come on this forum. Especially considering you're a mod.

ps. Also, it's "Smart", not "Small".

Agreed, but even for smart people a clearer distinction between posts and signatures can help.

My comment wasn't meant as criticism on your signature in particular, but rather about signatures on this forum in general. I would love to make mine smaller, but I can't, because size is disallowed in signatures for some reason.

(I should have perhaps done better to omit your name from the comment...)

My signature has a smaller font size in it. How was I able to do it and you can't?

Try modifying the size now. You should be able to make it smaller than the default.

I'd previously disabled the size feature to prevent obnoxiously large signatures, but making it smaller should be no problem. I re-enabled it with a size limit of 1, so let me know if that works.

The point is about the guiding principle, used to determine my action.
Setting high (depending how you look at it) standards, can lead to good result even, when from time to time someone doesn't reach them.

I guess it was mistakes, but there is a difference between high goals and throwing people out who don't reach them.
Quote:

It means that I think that my want to improve my behavior.
A goal is a direction. I rather have an atmosphere were people improve or help other improve (learn how to use a forum), than one with a lower standard.

I reacted to Jim's criticism of my signature. It's feedback, so I try to explain we I do thinks the way I do.
If I can't do that without the collateral damage that someone read it as my saying "xzy" is dumb, that is okay.
On the other hand it isn't the intent of the post.

Having heard the feedback about my signature from multiple sources, I will also use a smaller font.

You can do anything anyway :P

Wow, that smaller font looks so much better on you Brutha!

And Robert, sorry for hijacking your thread for a discussion about font sizes! I hope you do consider passing on Brutha's actual advice (Go places, join toastmasters) to your friend, 'cause those are some solid suggestions. I'd add my own to the list, but I have never been to Vancouver, so I can't give any specific hints.

From what I've heard, it's a beautiful place... so he'd best keep his eyes peeled!

Ok, I see what you're saying now. You're not saying to exclude those who've never been on forums to come on here. You're simply saying we're not going to lower our standards to deal with these people, instead we'll just teach them? Sounds much better then what I had first understood your post to be about.

Yeah, good thing we don't require perfect english on this forum, or else I wouldn't be allowed in

I agree with Brutha, at least on the On Topic Portion. Join a local Toastmasters, a BNI or the CHamber of Commerce. Join up on Myspace, Facebook and especially, LinkedIN.

Go out and about.

Hello,

There are several options do they have a chamber of commerce in Vancouver? Also he could try the social networking sites, Facebook | Welcome to Facebook!, StumbleUpon » webwhiting's web site reviews and blog, and MyBlogLog.
