Marc Andreessen, one of the founders of Netscape and other companies, wrote an interesting blog post about planning a career: blog.pmarca.com: The Pmarca Guide to Career Planning, part 1: Opportunity Since he sold a company for $1.6 billion, he probably knows what he's talking about. |

Thanks for the link, I've enjoyed part 0, 1, and 2 so far, though as the first disclaimer in part 0 mentions, "These posts are not appropriate for people for whom work/life balance is a high priority or for whom lifestyle is particularly important". I tend to engineer my life to maximize opportunities for interesting experiences rather than simply building a resume, but still I enjoyed the mindset embodied in the writing.

Zukin? I only read the tittle of this thread and all that I can tell you is that what ever you do you must do it as part of your planning for what will be in the future and not for what is now. Before I started my own company I was a simple machinist that was able to live in style and never lacked for a new job when ever I had problems with the company that I was working for. Carpenter, electrician, machinest, mechanic and so on are jobs that you should learn first and using those jobs for security you can then expand and get in what ever other field you would like to try out. A good example of this is in what I do, I must always keep X ammount of money at hand before I buy anything, and the reason for this is that I never know what I will REALLY need the money for. If you fail as a technician, programmer, salesmen or whatever you will always have a back up job......you will never go hungry. As a matter of fact you will have more confidence and will do better in your new job because you will always know that you can do somethig else. A free man will perform better, than one who is a slave, because he is working for himself......., |
