Or, another metaphor I've seen used: Suppose you have ring that needs to be repaired. It's your favourite ring. You take it to the jeweller and say, "I need you to repair this for me." The jeweller says, "Sure, I can do that. Give me the ring." And you go, "No, I want to hold on to it." And the jeweller says, "Well, until you let me have it, I can't give you want, which is a repaired ring," and on it goes until you finally put the ring down and let the jeweller do his work.
It's not a perfect metaphor, but it gets the idea across. Letting go is not the same thing as giving up. Relaxing your grip is a necessary step.
