The missing link for these high performing academics is people skills. The career world at large don't really care about your grades at school but they do care about how well you interact with others at work and what you can do for their organizations.
This is an area that I talk about at length during my talks at colleges and universities. I give a heads up for students who are near graduation to encourage them to prep up their people skills.
