One cool thing I've seen people do is work on index cards, scan them and upload them to Flickr - there you can use tags in the same way as RT Wolf does with Gmail.
A memory-stick based alternative could be something like
TiddlyWiki - a reusable non-linear personal web notebook, which is incredibly flexible for this kind of stuff. Gmail might suit you better though.
