I agree and this could be weather dependent as well. Even if good stats point to one or the other, I doubt that it will significantly influence people to make a switch. I think that as long as whatever you are doing is getting you healthy, that's good.

Having said that, I've seen people fall off threadmills which is something you don't see on the road.
